My dad has gotten into hot rods lately. Bought a '46 Ford Coupe a while back, and recently bought a '52 Chevy. Gives him something to do in his retirement, and he doesn't have to load a trailer up with tires, tools, spares, jack, jackstands, etc. for racing anymore. Just goes to local car shows with a nice daily driver. Couple of folding chairs, cooler, and a small pop-up tent, and he's good for a couple of hours.

Street racing! NAWWWWWWSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL
Scratch built car, it'll take a few years to complete, saving on track costs to pay for it. By then your Mojo will be back

I recently started playing with vacuum tube amps; fixing and making (guitar and Hi-Fi).

That fixed my "meh".
11yrs of driving, instructing and driving some more at DE's open lapping and test days got me to the point where I really didn't want to bother.
One race weekend in a pack of 40 cars cured me right up. I'm back to lying to myself about my income so I can get another set of tires to finish out the year.
Sorry kids... pay for your own damn college!

That sounds cool, can you still get new parts?

i have garage space and some money, no mechnical ability...........funny i use to really enjoy it, just lost interest, still look for race cars to buy everyday, find one and don't pull the trigger, just can not come up with something else to do, any ideas???
VW Vortex is full of people with those same characteristics.
Unfortunately, they don't actively know that they have no mechanical ability.
Build shop, buy mig and tig welders, tubing bender, compressor, drill press, mill, brake, etc., power tools out the wazoo... have fun.
Sounds like the NY asian escort canoe can help with boredom.
But seriously, either W2W, or build a hot rod.
Start taking flying lessons at the local airport, that should use up your money and get you away from cars.
Hot rods would be cool. Real hot rods, not the fiberglass stuff. I've actually thought about building one.
Another suggestion, what about getting your dream car? (Assuming you have one) Getting it and just enjoying driving and taking it to shows?

Nothing like it. Me, two weeks ago.
What the video doesn't catch is me giggling like a little kid.
Vintage is especially swell. And with old cars like mine, high-level mechanical skills are not mandated. Blacksmith tools are fine.

Almost everything is still available; eastern europe and china are still making new tubes based on the classic ones developed in the '30s to the '50s.

If I ever go W2W again it will be small bore vintage with a 13/13 rule. My first attempt (13 years ago along with Tom Spangler) in IT was a financial disaster. I'd some how convinced myself that racing IT at my local track (Waterford Hills) would cost the same as the previous years doing regional level solo, pro solo and Nationals due to no travel or hotels. Ha! warming my house by throwing $100 bills on the fire would have been cheaper!
This thread was right above the "grenade fishing" thread for a while. There are no coincidences.
In reply to Adrian_Thompson:
BMWCCA and NASA both have some variant of the 13/13 too. On top of that - the BMWCCA has no prizes for winning other than a sticker and bragging rights so it is pretty hard to defend a low percentage aggressive move that ends in bent metal.

What is this 13/13
If you do something stupid at most Vintage club races you get put on probation for 13 months. If you do another stupid thing within those 13 months, you are suspended for 13 months.
The "something stupid" varies a bit from club to club, but generally it means you were at fault for a metal-to-metal incident. I've also seen it applied to significant single-car incidents.
Most of the clubs are part of the Vintage Motorsports Council that tracks these things across the country, so you can't flit from club to club doing stupid things.

Exactly.
It's the racing version of the Naughty List.
