Wow, strong words. It sounds like one kid is taking it to heart. The other two, not so much....

He's disappointed in them not living up to their potential, are they happy?

STFU!

I see his point. Go ahead and screw up your life all you want but if you are constantly calling home to mommy because you screwed up your life and dumping your cares and worries on her then yeah, grow up.

Was it harsh, yep. And I think some of it may have been misdirected, seems the older daughter more or less has a handle on her life. And the living up to your potential bit bothers me because as 914Driver asks, are they happy, that should be the measure by which you judge their success.

The point is though they aren't happy, at least not from the view he received of their lives. He sat by long enough watching his wife become a dumping ground for all the complaints, problems and unhappiness for the spoiled, entitled children he helped create and he had to speak his piece.

I would take that as constructive criticism and strive to turn things around and be able to change his perception of me. But then, my Dad is cut from similar cloth and I am reasonably successful and happy in no small part because of it.

I know a few people that could use a letter like that. The one daughter admits that she's not happy and dumped on her mom. I can't imagine the other two being much better. I can see the dad's frustration. My brother, sister and I are all happy and we don't whine to them but none of us are doing as well as he hoped we would, some of it our own doing and some of it due to the E36 M3ty economy here in NY the last couple of years but I can tell it bothers him that we are where we are.

I wrote a long reply but deleted it as too personal to myself. I'll just say that growing up with a parent like that could be part of the reason for some of the kids underachievement.

Note, I don’t think most people would call me an underachiever so I’m not making excuses for myself.

I completely agree. There are plenty E36 M3heads out there that deserve an ass beating or more/less of what their getting, but in a private matter that is not yours (because you'd bring it up if you wanted to chat about it) or mine, I just couldn't care less about them.
