REM announces they're done...after 31 years.

http://www.slicingupeyeballs.com/2011/09/21/rem-breaks-up/

Jeez, seems like yesterday sometimes. I lived in Starkville, MS and once a month or so me & my friends would climb into my old rusty BMW E3, riding 5hrs to Atlanta's Metroplex & 688 Club. Here she is with my E21 323.

Oh well..might as well leave through the door I came in..couldn't find one with a Hib-Tone sleeve, tho.

Answer: Today is the day you got this old, and thank god you made it.

Then you mentioned 688, and I realized today was the day I got this old too (but maybe not as much).

Woohoo! I'm not that old yet! I have no idea what you're talking about I mean, yeah, I know who REM is, but that's about it.

Used to work with their sound engineer back in my rocker days at the mixing console company (neotek if anyone remembers).

BTW: the best REM records were before they were signed by a major label (another thing that seems not to change.. )

@oldtin: What did you city guys think of all us little rednecks coming to see the show?

@David: WANT. I don't have a lot of the singles or EPs because we blew all of our dough getting to the shows.

Truth be told, we went to Memphis more often because it was an hour closer. One of my old "crew" & her husband are actually working on a documentary about the Antenna Club.

Director Scott McCoy is my old friend's (the blonde with the sweater in that GT-6 photo I whore so often) husband. She tells me the damn thing's currently coming in at about 140min..but people keep giving them too much cool stuff (performance vids, etc.) to throw any of it out!

I keep checking out girls before they turn around and I see the graduation year on their shirt. I feel dirty.

I grew up on a farm - was more at home with the rednecks than the city crowd. The engineer was from Nashville - couldn't miss him - 6'3", blonde hair, blue-eyed Chinese (1/2) guy with Tennessee accent.

I have a ton of old stuff from Athens, but much is on cassette or vinyl. A friend from school has said he'd transfer it to digital. One day I'll take him up on that.

In reply to David S. Wallens:

I should dig up the old audiophile thread. I've got a fair Mitsu cassette player (heads are dead on the first deck, but OK on the 2nd one..ten bucks at the thrift store), but I let my turntables go years ago. I like Yamaha, and the ones I had were belt-drive. I saw a tt in the Big Lots (of all places) with a USB connection..but it was made in China. I skipped it.

My current age plus 1. At least that's what I tell myself.

And a friend of mine works in the music/recording industry. I'm going to assume he has access to killer gear.

I get that too and sometimes that old fart looks like my dad.

You're old if you remember the original super-models and don't care what they look like now:

All hail the cougars/milfs/gmilfs of the world - they rule....

And, I've always preferred my REM while sleeping, not listening.

Yeah, I've been coming to grips with my "old fartness" for a while now. I loved REM when they first started getting radio airplay with South Central Rain back in what, 1984? I bought most all of their early stuff, but they lost me sometime after "Monster". Pretty sure "Reckoning" is my fave REM album, and as with most bands, I find their early stuff much more interesting than their later stuff.
