So my GF's dog got skunked. We called the 24hr vet and they gave us a recipe to get her de-skunked. It seems to have worked, but there is still some lingering smell. We gave her 2 baths with hydrogen peroxide, dawn soap, and baking soda. Then a 3rd bath with regular shampoo. She's now drying in her crate so she doesn't get on any furniture. Any other suggestions for getting rid of that last bit of stench? Thanks.

I'd always heard that tomato juice breaks it down very well.

Time.

It will be almost gone by tomorrow and fade over the next few days.

Our Border collie has been hit a number of times.

As someone who was raised breeding bassets and beagles, we've had our share of skunkings.

The absolute best way to get rid of the smell is a clothespin... for you, not the dog. Tomato juice is an old wives tail and it makes your dog smell like skunk and tomato. Vinegar makes them smell like skunk and salad dressing.

Use soap, but trust me, 3 years from now you'll still get a whiff of it.

Am I the only one not bothered by skunk spray?

It smells, but not horribly awful.

I'd say it's about on par with wet dog and probably a little better than wet smoker.

Tomato juice. Wifey worked at six flags and people liked to pet the pretty stripped kitties.

AMEN

They make shampoos just for getting rid of skunk odor. We've tried all the old wives tales and the purpose made shampoos are the best. Not perfect and it takes multiple washings, but the dog seems to appreciate your efforts to rid them of the smell.

I've got a lab that just can't get enough skunk. Before we moved, he used to get a mouthful of polecat almost every month.

What I've found that works is as soon as they get sprayed, I start getting naked, and then I drag his ass into the shower with me. I use Johnson's baby shampoo and wash/rinse/repeat two or three times. The baby shampoo works at least as well as anything else on the market for getting rid of the smell, and I can use it in his eyes and mouth without adding even more damage to the dog.

You'll still catch a whiff of skunk for the next day or two, but it's livable.

I actually like the smell most of the time. There is the odd skunk that has a very musky smell, and I don't care for that.

Our dog got sprayed several times and what really worked was warm water, it evaporates the stench really well. Most people make the mistake of using just a garden hose but that's just cold water. Use as warm as possible without burning your pooch and baby shampoo will also help.

Parents dogs both got popped a while back and found out petsmart will de-skunk for a nominal fee.

I actually rather like it(from a distance anyway, as in 60mph with the windows down). It's right up there with "new tire smell" in my book.

Happened when they were let out first thing in the morning, heard a commotion, went out to see and they ran in and straight back to the bedroom. I think they went in the car but don't know what my dad used to keep the smell from staying in the car

A friend had a young kitten wander away from home. We all looked and looked trying to find it.

The next morning she was awakened by a pathetic meowing on her front porch. So she went and opened the door. There was her kitten accompanied by a baby skunk both calmly sitting there waiting to be let in.
