Two guys were arrested and charged with Terrorism after inventing what they called "Hiroshima on a Stick". Basically a weapon that shoots X-Ray radiation at their enemies.
Undercover cops were involved and say it would never have gotten off the ground, good theory, but it drew too much power to be feasible.
They're looking at 15 years.

Hm. The article does not say how far they got or exactly why they are facing 15 years. Are there links to more complete reports?
They would have needed to find that ever-elusive flux capacitor anyway. I've called every radioshack within 50 miles, alas, no employee has been able to find one...
The answer is clearly freeze ray
[...and X-rays? Seriously, it would be much easier to build a microwave gun....who doesn't have an emitter or two laying around the garage from scrapping old microwave ovens for metal?]

I work with XRay Fluorescence machines that measure coating and plating thickness. Were they planning on killing someone, like 15 years later??

For some reason I'm having trouble lately with links. The spoken media; radio and TV are saying arrested for Terrorism and face 15 years.
Yes Jerry, they set up something stronger than XRF, mounted to a truck and hoped to hit people that will go home and die or something. The problem is the amount of power required to make the thing run was prohibitive. I love stupid smart people.

Scary brilliant idea. It could kill someone in a matter of weeks and leave no evidence, even to eyewitnesses. About as close as you could get to the perfect crime.
