a few weeks ago my dell lattitude somethingorother cheap used laptop screen went dark on me.
it still works, i can shine a flashlight at the screen and see that things happen like they should, just the screen lost it's backlight or whatever makes it bright.
easy fix? DIY job? need a new screen?
i can get the model if need be, it's out in the car. i'd like to get it back working since it is my GPS and music storage system for the vic.
It could be that the connection has come loose. On my last IBM laptop there was a ribbon cable that ran to the motherboard and had a habit of working it's way loose after opening and closing the laptop a lot. Luckily, on that model there was a plastic panel that I could pop off just at the top of the keyboard and the connection was under there. Just a push and it was good to go for another month.
most likely the backlight has died
it can be done DIY for about $10 (Somewhere I know of a site that sells just the bulbs)
or, get a screen of Ebay for about $100-600 depending

yea, the one my toshiba does that.. about every 3 months I need to open it up and reconnect the cable where it came loose.. I should Etape it
Ahh, yes, cable creep. I think 60% of the computers I've had to crack open for hardware issues had that or chip creep (same thing, only it happens to RAM chipsets/expansion cards/etc.).
BTW, patgizz, awesome avatar. I missed out on winning tix to see their Boston St. Patrick's day show by 1 call. I was pissed!

Some common issues include:
# Flickering, red or pinkish hue to the display and even total darkness.
These symptoms are a result of a failed or aging backlight or a failed, damaged or non-operating power inverter responsible for powering the CCFL lamp. Our "complete backlight repair service" is backed by a 1 year service warranty.
come to think of it the display had a red hue for the first 10-20 seconds depending how cold it was.
one of my goals in life is to see the murphys in boston on st patricks day.
