Piggy-backing off of the 90's Disc thread... what are you Desert Island albums?

You are trapped on a desert island (with an inexplicably killer sound system). What top Ten (or top Five and Top Ten) albums would you take with you?

For me...

First 5 in no particular order:

  1. Pink Floyd - 'Wish You Were Here'
  2. Steely Dan - 'Aja' (but Pretzel Logic is close)
  3. Yes - 'Fragile'
  4. Led Zeppelin 2 (tough call over Physical Graffiti)
  5. Jeff Buckley - 'Grace'

And 6-10...

6. Duran Duran - 'Rio'
7. Rush - 'Moving Pictures'
8. Daft Punk - 'Random Access Memories'
9. Miles Davis - 'Kinda Blue'
10. Willie Nelson - 'Stardust'

Honorable mentions:

  • Tom Waits - 'Mule Variations' (this got bumped by Miles Davis)
  • Elton John - 'Goodby Yellow Brick Road'
  • Nina Simone - 'Pastel Blues'
  • Herbie Hancock - 'Head Hunters'
  • Beatles - 'Abbey Road'
  • Police - 'Synchronicity'

Man, that's a hard one to answer, partly because–and I know this probably shows I'm a youngin–I tend to listen to one or two songs from an artist instead of a whole album.

However, Daft Punk has to be on my list somewhere.

In reply to barefootcyborg5000 :

That's only 9.

(Ziggy Stardust, Disintegration, and Hemispheres were all strong considerations for me.)

I don't have the mental capacity to come up with a list right now, but Van Halen 5150 would be one, and Rush, probably moving pictures. Maybe Metallica S&M.

Good lists. I'd enjoy my time listening to music on the desert island with y'all...

Three outstanding live albums (to me) are:

1987 - Peter Gabriel "Plays Live"

1977/78 - Little Feat "Waiting for Columbus"

1976 - J. Geils Band "Blow Your Face Out"

Elton John, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.  Double album, one of the most interesting collections of non radio played music, from the height of Bernies lyrics.

Edit: Can I cheat, and bring Caribou and Rock ofbthevWesties as well?

How about every album from 73, 74 and 75?  Would that be too much?

Damn, Divison Bell.  That and Dark Side of the Moon should have been on my list...my brain freezes up every time I try to do one of these

I always have trouble narrowing things down. If I answered this tomorrow, it would probably be entirely different.

I did have trouble picking a Floyd album though. While I like the tracks better on Dark Side, I feel like Division Bell is a more cohesive album. Echoes was also high on the list, and I have fond memories of Animals after seeing the Australian Pink Floyd do it live in concert a few years back.

In reply to RevRico :

We saw Australian Pink Floyd at the Wang Center in Boston a few years back, old school restored theater with solid acoustics from the time before amplification so a great place to see a show.  My son was in a massive Pink Floyd phase at the time and we got tickets for the whole family for his birthday.  They were amazing, likely the best live performance I've ever seen.

Oh boy.  I haven't kept up with newer stuff really, so I'm going off a bad memory, but here goes.

1. Joe Satriani - Surfing with the Alien

2. Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell

3. Type O Negative - October Rust (barely beating out Bloody Kisses)

4. KISS - Double Platinum (I grew up in the 70s, what can I say?)

5. Metallica - Ride the Lightning (one of the 1st metal albums I bought in early high school)

(I'll stop here and reserve the right to inevitably come back and say "oh yeah, forgot about that one.")

This is a pretty good mix, I'd change anything Gojira for weezer - pacific daydream but otherwise I'd live with and slowly die with the rest.

Ooohhh yeah. Weezer's blue album will always be one of my favorites.

I agree with my fiance, I asked her this earlier after I answered and she said, "E36 M3, that is such a hard question to answer."

I'm not a big country fan, but Garth Brooks being an Okie (like myself) has some great tunes. So does Dolly Parton, I don't know how you couldn't help yourself but to sing along to (9 t0 5). Also a few from "The Man in Black" and some others, but I'm not as well versed in their catalogs to confidently be able to pick an album.

If you wanted another thrash album, Rust in Peace by Megadeth is a great thrash album.

I like way too many different genres of music, but do have a couple I'd pick.

I'd also want Rhonda Vincent Ragin' Live. Yes, bluegrass.

Not a bad song on this album:

Being a child of the 80s, I'd have to have a selection from my favorite hair band.

For my last choice, I'd probably go with the Greatest Hits compilation of Shania Twain. Her voice is just...delicious.

I thought blue album but the dang thing is like 28 minutes long, don't want to have to get up out of the sand to push play that often....
