My IPod has failed The drive makes a clicking sound and then I get this screen.....
RIP 30gig IPod. You were loved and will truly be missed.
(Taps plays in the background and NOT from an IPod....)

check out ifixit.com. they have howto's on opening 'em up and putting in a new hard drive. or better yet a compact flash card. I did that for my old ipod mini.
Yep, its a fun little project for a DIY'er. Just take your time and be careful with the connectors and cables.
BTW, one was a 1st Gen Shuffle, one was a 2nd Gen Shuffle, and the third was a 2G Touch.
I also shattered the harddrive on my old Creative Zen Jukebox.
When searching for the image I shamelessly hotlinked in my first post, I found a blog that had a fix for this: You smack it on a pad of paper data-connection-side down. I tried it. Didn't work. So I did what seemed the natural progression of steps: I shook it voilently side to side and in a circle. Working ever since!!!!
I am interested in breaking this one open when it dies. I would like to see it work with a card insead of a drive. Has anyone done this one??

Well some of us keep our toys more than 30 seconds! I'll bet it was from a time when solid state MP3's were limited to 4gigs.
I loved mine too untill some dirt bag stole it from my car in an Indiana motel parking lot :(
mine is starting to fail, a little ipod 2gig, got in my car one day and half the screen is distorted, but it still plays music...
Ive got an old turd sandisk 1 gig...worked great until it didnt. I think my firmware took a crap...which sucks cuz its old as dirt and probably doesnt have a FW upgade out there anywhere
Anyone wanna post an old iPod in the pay it forward thread?
Yeah I killed my 30 gig Zen late last year. It was sitting in the seat in the car the person on the other side closed their door hard enough to make it slide off...right into the door jam of the door I was closing .
It had no external damage but the screen was completely FUBAR.
My first generation-video (5th generation Ipod?) still works well, except for a couple of horizontal black lines in the screen. If I ever watched movies/videos on it I'd actually care. It mostly just gets car-time now.
As an aside, I love having an ipod for the car. Get a playlist of 100ish songs, put it on shuffle, never worry about changing music. Awesome for a long drive.
No more issues today with my old 30Gig but I no longer trust it like I did. Nothing is permanent, I guess.
I like it when my phone plays music and movies and takes pictures and surfs the internet. Or is it, I like when my music player takes phone calls and...and...and...
My house is a reflection of the iPod era. We have a 2nd gen shuffle and 3 nanos (one each black and white 1st gen and one second gen) that aren't in use. The kids both have 8gb 2d gen iPod touches and the wife and I each have 16gb iPhone 3GSs. Haven't killed any of them yet.

Same here. See no need for one.
Wait, you mean there are ways of carrying music with you? I have never heard of this listening to AM stereo.
I've got a 60GB iPod Video that's still going strong but slowly filling up, and two iPhones. Well, two because the first one got run over by a truck and I needed a replacement ASAP...
Second one got repaired by now, but that's got to go on ebay soon.
I find the iPod a very convenient way of carrying my music for long journey. Easier than picking a few favourites out of 300+ CDs and it also saves the CDs from damage in the car (think heat etc) as some of them are a little on the rare side.
To me, the iPod is nothing more than a way to control programming. The lack of good choices in music where I live has frustrated me since I was a kid. With the advent of the MP3 player, that frustration was flushed down the toilet!! Now I only listen to the radio when I'm not paying any attention whatsoever. If I want enjoyment, iPod all the way.
You luddites can continue to revel in your curmudgionly curmudgionry. I'll take the modern conveniences in life, thank you.
I've got a Creative Zen Jukebox that I bought for $25 with a bad hard drive. I put a 100gig HD in it and it's been rockin' ever since. It pretty much just stays on top of my stereo system in the living room, and occasionally makes it to the car when making a longer than normal drive. People occasionally make fun of how big it is, but I'm used to hearing that.
