This news sucks. When I was little, my Dad was on a pit crew for a local stock car driver and I used to cheer on the "White Knight" whenever he was there. Awesome driver that should have been in Cup long before he was.

We could have done without Cole...

This. I remember during the Clinton impeachment, the joke of "Who is Bill Clinton's favorite NASCAR driver?"
Also, Abe Vigoda is...

GRM truly is the news.....I saw this elsewhere, came here to post it, and found an existing thread. I'm not sure why I read any other sites.
I doubt racing will ever see another guy like him, smoking during cautions and so on...
And that's a shame. Because he never won in Cup, people forget just how good he was in other series.
I see stuff like this heralding the end of "fun" Nascar. It's gotten entirely too corporate. I like the fact that there's still fights and bump drafting and stuff- but The old guard going, it's not going to be long before the field is going to be entirely too pretty people groomed for the sport instead of a buncha good ol boys done good that wanna go fast.
Winningest short-track driver of all time. Won over 1200 Feature races in his career...and was an absolute legend here in Wisconsin.
Godspeed, 'White Knight'.

This is what I like about old school Nascar.

It is a sad day for the NASCAR and short-track community.

Sorry, Tom.
My dad started taking me to races here in Illinois in the late 60's when I was about 6.It was awsome. Then in 70 or 71 the racers from Wisconsin started coming down for special events and the best of our guys would be in the slow heats. They were that much better and Dick was the best of them.I thought he was the greatest thing ever and he didnt seem to be a Bob Costas. He was my childhood hero. I dont really even know the guy yet I feel as bad about him dying as I have when people I know have passed
We have run the Octoberfest races at LaCrosse for several years now.. I guess it will be the "Dick Trickle Memorial 99" from here on.
Sad circumstances, although not knowing all the details of his life recently, I will not pass judgement on his decision. I can respect those decisions sometimes.
I grew up and lived in La Crosse - my dad and older brother used to take me to the races during the Trickle dominated time. He was the face of racing in WI.
Sad news
Bugs me that Nascar claims him as one of their star drivers when he spent the majority of career racing and winning in the ASA. His Nascar career is but a small dot of what this guy accomplished. On a side note, sources inidcate that he was living with serious chest pain that noone could diagnose or treat, so without obvious options, he made a choice. Sad that it came down to that.
He did have 303 starts in cup racing...but probably the big thing was the Sports Center guys- Olberman and whoever always giving his finishing position. Apparently he took the name jokes in good humor.

well, they were sponsored by Winston at the time...
but, yeah, things have changed... Brad Keselowski got fined for using his Sprint (series sponsor) smartphone to tweet during the red flag at a race last year...
