This Hotel/Supper club claimed to be the grooviest. http://www.lileks.com/institute/motel/index.html Does any have a story about it. It seems a shame that something so special is out of business.

Haven't stayed there, but James Lileks is one of my favorite journalists (he's a columnist for the Minneapolis newspaper.) There's a lot of good stuff on his website if you're into quirky history and architecture.

Bingo. I have spent many hours there. Don't miss the Gallery of Regrettable Food, or the work of Art Frahm.
Oh, man. There's another great relic hotel in SW Wisconsin that I stayed at a couple years ago during a road trip. Theme rooms (we stayed in 'the cave'). Giant WWII-era transport plane on the lawn. Underground tunnel to the restaurant. I'll have to search my memory banks to come up with the name.
Man, that place is awesome, and a real relic. (Featuring such amenities as bathtubs made of former cheese vats!) It's tucked away in a gorgeous area - southwest Wisconsin is a well-kept secret of great driving and bucolic scenery. If you have the chance, get up there with a small, open sports car (I did it in a Miata, naturally - which is for sale in the classifieds) and enjoy the simple side of life for a while: good roads, friendly folks and fatty foods.
Combine it with a trip to Elkhart Lake for a vintage event, and you've got yourself my ideal vacation.
The C-97's just there parked on the lawn for folks to walk through. It's pretty damn cool. Evidently (I'm recalling this from foggy 2 year-old memory), they actually landed it on the property and taxied it to the spot where it now sits - it wasn't just some movie prop they towed in.
The Don Q is awesome. I think I have to try the swing room when I go back.
I was at a bachelor party where the entertainment performed a move called the Gobbler.
I would tell you more but I didn't have $30 in cash on me.
