NEW YORK (WABC) -- A New York City bus burst into flames as it crossed the Verrazano Bridge, but the driver got his passengers out just in the nick of time.
Then, the fire spread to several cars parked along the road in Bay Ridge.
It all started when the bus ran over a mattress, which got caught under the back carriage and punctured the gas line shortly after 11 p.m.
Gas poured from the bus and flowed into a gutter, which triggered a fiery stream under a row of cars.
The S53 bus had exited just after the bridge, dragging the blazing twin-sized mattress.
Passengers were evacuated without incident.
the Jag owner looked ready to cry... bummer
New laws in NYC controlling how you haul a mattress in 5, 4, 3, 2,...
Sucks to be the car owners. Glad no one was hurt.
it's NY.. hope there was nobody sleeping on that mattress
Only in NYC... Wally, you certainly have an interesting job.
Uh, I'm not going to admit to not tying down my mattress now....
Reminds me of a Lenny Clark stand up routine where he helps move a buddy out of Boston in a pick up. Last thing into the truck was the mattress. Not tied down of course. Something was mumbled about centrifugal force holding that sucker in there. Doing 65 out the Mass Pike when whoosh the mattress flies out the back and up into the air. Slams up against a DPW truck on the side of the road.....woke everybody up.
When my buddies andi would move big things; the JOKE always was to keep driving and don't stop if you lose any part of the load.
Robert Lewis lost his F350 Dually, enclosed trailer, a ton of spares, and nearly lost his CP Mustang to a similar incident. Was able to get the car, tools, and some of the spares out of the trailer before it was engulfed.
I had a mattress blow out of my little utility trailer once when moving - I was only going 30mph, but somehow the wind caught it and flipped it out on the road.
Several other cars ran over it by the time I was able to stop and go back and get it, but outside of a few tire tracks it was fine.
My brother and a friend took a short trip in his pickup and they were leaning on the back of the pickup later talking when he realized that when he left he had had a canopy.....

I hope they do, mattresses are one of the worst things to get dropped in the freeway for that very reason. I have heard stories of similar incidents too.
Not mattress related, but some buds lost 3 enduro bikes when one guy flipped a butt out of the van window and it lodged on a plastic fuel can. The trailer etc burned to the ground.
