Chuckle, sometimes, it just all goes wrong. I did a similar with a bison herd once out in Oklahoma. Definitely not one of my brighter ideas.
Anyhow, while it's likely that elk would have spooked off had he simply stood up and acted dangerous, sometimes that inspires the attack. Trying to hang on to antlers would not fun or easy. Though about the time he started getting a bit more aggressive, I'd have been quite inclined to at least try it.
Yeah, it they're anything like young stud colts, they're all balls and false bravado. Shouting and waving the hat at it would probably have caused him to make a hasty retreat.
