Decent fx, not worth the midnight viewing, IMHO. The commercials that we had to sit thrilough ahead of the movie were very strange. To the point that they make the random stuff in Family Guy seem logical.

Yeah, how was the story? I thought "Alive in Jo'burg" was brilliant, if D-9 was as good only longer, I'll go see it.
I thought the movie was badass. The guns and the mech battle were awesome.
The story was mainly about greed and discrimination. It had some open ends so you had to make some leaps of faith but I thought it was pretty darn good as a overall package.
LOTR trilogy: Some of the best E36 M3 I've ever seen.
Dead Alive: Favorite funny gore movie evar.
King Kong: Pretty much the worst berkeleying movie I've ever seen.
I really want PJ to make a "great" movie again. Sounds like this one doesn't fall into that catagory.

Why do you say that? Everything I've heard says it's great?
You can't forget Bad Taste and Meet the Feebles. Sure, Dead Alive pretty much tops all, but those aren't too shabby. I haven't seen King Kong, so I haven't lost hope. I will see this one soon.

Don't get me wrong. Jackson's "When in doubt, always go for the gag" philosophy works...but not without a great story and dialogue. If I just wanted to see 3 hours of E36 M3 blowing up with a weak storyline and dialogue, I could invite some friends over, get drunk, take some guns, fireworks, and jugs of gasoline into the backyard, and have a field day. The drinks are cheap, and I don't have to pay admission.

Again, if this is anything like Blomkamp's "Alive in Jo'burg" I don't think you'll have a weak storyline and dialog. What you'll have is a pile of awesome.
But I haven't seen it so I can't speak for it.

Don't forget "The Frighteners." Vastly underrated, awesome flick.
D9 looks quite good. Has the look of a movie made by guys that love making movies. I like that. I'll know for sure tomorrow at 11:15 am.

Tomorrow. 7PM. There will be guns, a festiva, and a horribly "offensive" cake involved.
In reply to maroon92:

....or tannerite. "Teh interwebs" show that is fairly impressive when used on geo metros
Wow.
Certainly one of the best movies of 2009 so far. I'd go so far as to put it with "Children of Men" in the category of great science fiction works of the 21st century.
It's refreshing when science fiction can be smart, and ask questions that don't have easy answers. Yes, it's fun to watch stuff explode, but the explosions are not what sticks with you, it's the themes that surround those explosions.
Just as impressive is the fact that this was made for $30 million, by a first time director, with a cast of absolute unknowns (many of them—like the lead—having never acted before). It was an amazing display of talent on many levels, and I'm glad Peter Jackson had the faith in Blomkamp to let him do whatever he wanted.
Here's "Alive in Jo'Burg." The short that the film sprang from.

Well I went and saw it today and I must say it was the best Sci Fi I have seen in a very long time. It did definitely leave things open for a second movie though I think.

Hard to make that comparison. I will say that you leave feeling about the same way: A little drained, like you need a shower, like you just saw something you absolutely weren't expecting, and with lots on your mind.
Someone that says it's definitely better than DK and can defend their opinion wouldn't get much argument from me, though.

That's a mighty big claim....hmmm, I may have to go see it after all.

I would have to agree. Smoke detector went off this morning at 5am waking me up to search the house for possible source of smoke. Once I cleared the house and was back in bed I found myself laying there thinking about the movie and some of the imagery used and some of the crossover to our world today.
I liked it. Smart and full of action, but...
They should have found a better pretext for the guy going into D-9 in the first place.
Having the Prawns 'sign' hard copies of eviction notices.... over a million of them?
Come on. ( I could probably think of a better and more plausible one in a day or two )

Saw it yesterday. I didn't realize that South Africa had a film industry big enough to make something like this. Could they have more on the way?
