I want to build a coffee table out of a Buick or Olds 350 I have sitting in my basement. First, how is it to use an Iron engine block? My biggest concern would be corrosion, am I correct in thinking that all non-painted surfaces would rust and look horrid? Paint the non-painted surfaces with a metal color paint or clear coat?

Second, If I can make it work with the block, any info how to compleat it would help, Thanks.

Saw-Zall the guts out of it. If yourliving room isn't damp it shouldn't rust, although I've seen Chevy blocks oxidize as soon as the water dries.

If you don't polish the metal too much, I'd try to lacquer the block after cleaning it properly. That should cut down on the rusty spots on the carpet.

Pickle it. There are lots of ways to preserve it. You can use gun bluing, pickling, plating.

We built cabinets and fixtures for a store using wood and dressed it with steel strips that we had pickled with a specific acid solution, then blued it with gun bluing. Made a nice, preserved corroded appearance.

Why not just wax it with car wax? Its not going to get beat up by weather, so it will last forever. Thats what i did with mine. No rust yet.
