Looking to put some new rubber on my Tacoma Prerunner. Stock size is 265/70-16, but I am pretty sure I'm going to a 245/75-16 for a myriad of reasons. I've always run highway tread pattern tires, but this is not a daily driver, more used for truck stuff and back up duty. Is there a really mild AT tire out there that wouldn't sacrifice on road performance, but would be slightly more capable in less than ideal road conditions? Snow traction is high on my list; the General Grabber APT has caught my eye as a good compromise with it's 3MPSF rating.

I have pizza cutters on my Tacoma. I have tried 225 for 2 years and now run 235s

I have had the Goodyear wrangler kevlar for a while. But these days run ko2 . Sees snow, and lots of gravel/construction, so the 10ply really helps in my need

Forgot to mention it, this is a non ABS truck, hence the desire for good snow performance. We don't get a lot and frankly the highway tires have always got me going with the rear diff locked, but slowing down has always been more of a challenge.

The Cooper's are absolutely very competitive on price. I take it there is good experience with them?

I checked tirerack and they have that size in the B.F. Goodrich Commercial T/A Traction, which I run on the rears on my Dooley.  I have the less aggressive Commercial T/A on the front (2WD truck).  Load range E.  Recommended.

The thread was over a while ago. This is a good answer, and they have the little snow icon on them and everything.

Medalist (Fisk) Sport King A/T tires.

Used to get them at Costco, ran them on all my trucks over the years. I think they're made on the old BFG A/T molds. Good truck tire and wear like they're made of cast iron.

He's absolutely right. I ran those on the ZJ. Quiet, smooth, 60k warranty and still great off road. I liked them so much I went a step gnarlier on my pickup - the XLT version in E Rated. Just as quiet and smooth as the P rated tires that came of of it although you can tell they are heavier. Even better in mud. And at 10k miles wearing like iron.

Oh, and they tow well.

I've had Goodyear Wranglers on a 4-Runner, a Chevy 1500 and now the Cadimino.  Not big studley 4X4 tires but have good bite in snow, decent enough grip in general (not Auto-Xing),  wear like iron and not at all noisy at highway speed.

I can't recommend the Wrangler Radial pictured above - it's an ancient design. It is priced very low, and is available in smaller sizes for the trucks produced when it was released, but there are much better options today.

I also wouldn't recommend the Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar for this usage case. It is geared towards off road, especially rock crawling usage.

The Wrangler All Terrain Adventure would probably be my first pick, then the Duratrac. I have Duratracs on my F150 and my wife's 4Runner, and we love them - but for mainly highway driving the All Terrain Adventure is honestly a better choice.

Sadly they haven't been made in about 8 years.  I had 2 sets on my Jeep, wore like iron.  My cheap ass tried to buy a pair about 3 or 4 years ago, and the tire store was concerned about the age of my tires, since they hadn't been made in so long.

Avoid the Wrangler AT/S at all cost.  I don't think I'd use those for a tire swing.  I work in agricultural research, a lot of dirt roads, and mild off road on field roads, levees, turnrows, etc.  I put a set or Wrangler AT/S on our Silverado, 1500, 4x4, work truck, in 3 months I had 5, yes FIVE plugs in my tires, 1 in 3 tires, and 2 in the 4th.  It's not like I was driving through a scrap yard or construction site.  I replaced the entire set after 3 months with a set of Silent Armor with Kevlar, and stepped up from D rated to E rated, and never had another flat.

My current work truck, '18 Ram 1500, 4x4 needs tires, and will be getting Cooper AT3s.

Falken Wildpeak AT3W. By far the best AT tire I've ever run. Better than BFG's, Wrangler's and Firestone's AT tires, on and off road. I have them on the truck, Suburban and the XJ.

That project update is what planted the seed of switching to AT tires.

There seems to be a plurality of folks who are fans of the Cooper's. $70 gift card through Tire Buyer, seems like I've got a winner!

I had good luck with these.. https://www.michelinman.com/tires/ltx/x-lt-a-s.html

They are not cheap, but last forever.  They are good for their mileage warranty, but usually get hard before the tread itself wears down enough for replacement.

I'll try the cooper's or toyo's on the next truck...

Really sad no one mentioned the BFG All-Terrains yet.  Those are my go-to for everything.

  • The durability
  • The performance
  • The solid raised white letters

Be still, my beating heart!

I had the previous generation of these on my Explorer.  Silent on the road, sufficient off road grip, excellent in the rain.  And wore FOREVER.  Like 120,000 miles on a set of tires without rotating them or anything.  They just never wore.  Finally replaced them for aging out.

agreed.  My tires were the older ones.. bought in 1999?  They outlasted the frame on the toyota truck I had them on...

Ditto. The BFG KO2 All Terrains have been awesome on my TJ. They have shown little wear and good traction so far for 20k miles. My use is primarily on road with dirt road, gravel, and the occasional farm excursion thrown in for a bit of fun.

I would look at the BFG Commercial line for heavier pickup use.

BFG KO2 All Terrains are great if you're doing trails all the time. They're not great, in my opinion, for on pavement use. Asphalt wears them down and they are LOUD.

They're also expensive versus what you get for soft roading and on pavement use.
