I got a 5 gallon job with the 40hp Evinrude, tank says OMC. Left to its own devices gas leaks out of the site glass that shows fuel level. Cap has two notches, first one closes it but lets it breathe a bit, the second (45' later) click locks it up, I assumme it breathes out of a vent.

Even with the cap on the first "click", slightly open, gas pours out of the site glass. I removed the cap all together and it stopped but the tank was about empty, don't know if it would have stopped by itself.

A new can is about $60, no biggie, but if a piece of gasket will fix this one I'd rather sort this out.

Any ideas?

Those were always bad about leaking around the gauge. You can probably re-seal it and stop the leak.

A couple of other things you need to check.

Corrosion would make the casting split where the fuel line plugged into the tank. Also, some of the tanks have a threaded fitting where the line plugs in, the threads will crack and it will leak.

There is also a valve that should seal the tank when the line is unplugged. They will leak and weep fuel when the tank pressurises on a hot day.

They will also leak at the seam on the bottom of the tank.

In your shoes, I'd be temped to get one of the newer plastic tanks unless you want to keep the boat vintage looking. They are a lot less prone to failure.

Thanks Toyman, I'm headed to the plastic aisle.

^^Agreed.

And the new plastic one will eventually leak in a similar way.

The OMC style fuel line couplings are crap too, replace them regularly or they will leak (fuel out, and air in). I really prefer the barb and hose clamp permanent fuel line fittings.

Ethanol fuel eats up the lines and bulbs too, run REC90 if you can.
