Mrs. DX and I are considering switching to the green lizard (GEICO) for car insurance. I could get a two car policy for less than what I am paying for one car currently. How is their customer service if a claim comes into play? Also, does anyone have homeowners insurance with them?
I've heard enough scary things from an Attorney friend of mine who's had to fight them for his client's benefits on top of the things I've heard from some of the folks here and elsewhere about them in general to ever buy insurance based only on price. Jus' sayin'
I've only heard good things. I switched to them this year and saved some cash. Added bonus I didn't have to talk to people and I could look at my coverage myself. No regrets!
hahaha
I hope that you never want to see an OEM replacement part on your vehicle if you decide to go with them and have to file a claim. You'd be lucky to get LKQ parts, PartsChannel is what they use. Laughable fitment, a 9 year old with access to a 3D printer could do better.

They drop you if you race or autocross your car. Adding a roll bar is also grounds for dropping (found out on the "retention" interview). State Farm is cool with both so that's where I'm at in Iowa.
I've got the lizard. Had them for, I dunno, 25 years? They have been OK for me. Had a claim when that deer hit me. The whole process was very smooth. I have them for the house too. I have no complaints.
Now, USAA, THEY SUCK. TOTAL SHINEY HAPPY PEOPLE.
I have them for the Harley. No complaints.
Well anything is better than the company I was with before Geico. I was ignorant and figured my family friend who was my insurance guy had me covered. Glad I didn't have to file a claim, but if I did I would have been in for a real E36 M3 show.
I've had the Lizard since 1973. My son is also on my policy but unfortunately so is his wife. She gets cranky when I tell her she drives like a Korean housewife.
No issues. His GTi and Jetta were both planked twice (4 accidents) in 8 months; no issues. Really. Rates never went up.

insurance satisfaction ime reflects the overall familiarity the insured actually has with how insurance works far more than the company they get coverage from.
for example. Most people tend to be ignorant that roadside assistance is not insurance.
We have them for a couple years and have been happy.

Apparently you've never worked at a body shop.
They advertize the lizard here in Michigan for motorcycles?
Guess what? You can't get it.
State Farm for everything. 1 check, multi-policy/long term discounts ftw.
Having worked for the Lizard for 5 years I can give some qualified insight.
Though they suck to work for, they treat their customers pretty well. If you piss and moan long enough and high enough up the chain of command you will usually get what you want. They do love aftermarket and used parts, and they are pretty rigid on that, but will agree to alternatives if the stuff simply doesn't fit right/looks like crap. Unlike Allsnake they usually do a once-and-done attempt with the alternative parts.
One thing you DON'T do is use their direct repair shops. These shops are on the program not because they do good work but because they do what the company wants. A select few are decent but almost all of the local ones to me are mediocre quality with techs that can't get hired anywhere else. Always seek out your own quality shop and force the insurer to deal with them.
Erie is probably the best. Allsnake is by far the worst.

Interesting. The first paragraph is true for pretty much all insurance companies. My experiences are very similar with the ones I've worked for, and currently work for. There are some minor variations, but the philosophy is generally the same.
The comments about the direct repair program really shows how each company runs their program differently. Like you, I've seen some network shops that I wouldn't bring my kids bicycle to. But I've also seen network shops that I'd bring any car to, as they do top quality work. Some carriers are very selective on what shops are in their network. Other carriers have a third party run their network for them, and are often not as selective.
Never dealt with the lizard, but I have nothing but good stuff to say about Erie. We have home insurance with them as well.
if it weren't for allsnake I'd still have my 05 STi (long story were they took 16 weeks; after the car had been repaired, to kick a claim the they had all of the information on from the get go)
I used Geico from 1993 to 2014. I only ever had one claim when a huge chunk of ice fell off a truck on my Jetta. Less deductible it cost Geico about $200. I've heard bad things about them, but without claims I can't comment. Service was excellent, web site is top notch.
