I've managed to snag an invite to buy the 64GB version and as I'm not too happy with my Sony Android I'm seriously tempted to buy it before throwing the towel and going back to an iPhone.

Anybody on here got any experience with this phone, especially on T-Mobile?

Of course given that these phones seem to be fairly sought after by phone geeks and not that freely available, I can probably get my money back by selling it on if it doesn't work for me...

Any issues with getting LTE? Specs suggest that the radio doesn't cover all the T-Mobile frequencies.

Also, what's the call quality like if you're in an area with mediocre reception? That's really the main issue I'm having with the Sony - at work, the call quality is completely useless. With my Lumia 920, also on T-Mobile, in the same location, I can actually have a voice call with both parties having a conversation so I blame this on the Sony phone.

Edit: Forgot to ask - any comments regarding the camera? I read very mixed reviews.

I'm sorry you got a Sony phone. I don't hear nice things about them.

Actually it's not that bad and if I was in an area where I had good cell reception all the time, it wouldn't be such a big deal. It is a pretty decent phone once I replaced several of the built in apps and it has the big advantage of being able to use microSD cards. Plus it's waterproof.

Main annoyances is that T-Mobile hasn't released the later Android updates for it yet (it's stuck on 4.3 when Sony says 4.4 is available) and that it tends to have the kind of hiccups occasionally that make me think of mid-90s Windows.

A friend has one. I don't have many details, but seeing in person, I think you'll be pleased.

it's on 4.3????? good lord- I'm on 5.01.. or something. Granted I have a Nexus, but still. Even my wifes phone is further than that.

Yeah, one of my favourite Android features, cell providers and manufacturers together not providing updates after a surprisingly short amount of time.

I know, I know, I should just root the thing but those things are tools, not toys...

Right, I've taken the plunge and ordered one. Let's see if I just wasted $360 including shipping or not...

In reply to BoxheadTim:

I'm curious. I've not had one in my hamds, but there's rumors there's no more nexus phones- and I'm not a real fan of anyone else's GUI.

I have no trouble getting LTE in my town. It will back down to H+ if the signal is weak.

Also, what's the call quality like if you're in an area with mediocre reception? That's really the main issue I'm having with the Sony - at work, the call quality is completely useless. Call quality is good. Even if I have only Edge signal the call quality works and drops are infrequent.

The camera is miles better than my previous phone - a Nexus 4. I'm not a real photo snapper but I can say pics and videos of my kids turn out really well. I'm happy with it.

My annoyances/positives with the phone are:

  • I'm still on Android 4.4. Irritating but Cyanogen did say they would have Android 5 out within 90 days of it's release. Personally, I'm tired of waiting. Since my last phone was a Nexus 4 I'm used to instant upgrades. I'd like to see Oneplus do that. Then again, I didn't pay $700 for a Nexus 6. I paid right around $350 for the One.

  • I really like it's customization and ability to change many things about the phone. That's quite, quite nice. No bloatware either.

  • The hardware and feel of the phone is great. It easily looks as good as any phone you'd paid 2x more.

I've debated on rooting the thing and putting on a lollipop operating system but I want to see what Cyanogen Mod can do with it. Also, I understand that after rooting the phone you can no longer get over the air (OTA) updates. I'd much rather have an OTA update than root and have to reconfigure the phone after. I've played around with rooting phones for years and at this point I just want the phone to work and work well. So far I'm happy with the Oneplus on Tmo.

Is the Sony a GSM phone? How much would you want to sell it for?

The Sony is a GSM phone - it's a T-Mobile branded Xperia Z. Not sure if it's unlocked yet or not if you want to use it on other networks, but I can look into that.

Seems like the going rate on fleabay is between $190-$240, I think I can live with a GRM price of around $150 + shipping.

I live in the Daytona Beach, FL area, and tried T-Mobile.

It was absolute crap. Barely had signal anywhere, none on I-95, none inside buildings, just a terrible network.

Their customer service was amazing, though. Such a nice company to deal with.

I'm now back on ATT; 5 bars everywhere with them.

This was with a new iPhone 6, btw.

Interesting. I'm already on T-Mobile - actually, one of my phones has been on T-Mobile for about three years now - and in general I'm happy with the network out here. We only go to Daytona Beach and Deland when we're visiting the in-laws . One thing to keep in mind is that I probably expect somewhat patchy service in the mountains here anyway.

The area where the office is located has been problematic for cell phone reception on multiple providers and it seems to separate the "works OK with 5 bars" phones from the "can squeeze a decent call out of two bars" ones.

Re the customer service, I agree, they are very nice to deal with.

Yeah the lack of support is mostly what I meant. The phone itself seems fine. I have a good friend that after the screen just died on his Sony(your phone) went back to Samsung and is very happy.

I did end up getting the phone, had it for about a week now and really like it. And that's speaking as Not An Android Fanboi.

I was planning on getting one then realized i needed a cdma phone. Your post saying you really like it ruins my day.

Thinking about rooting my LG G3. I like the LG skin over things, but i'm allergic to bloat.

Switch to Ting and you don't.

EDIT: Don't switch for another month, the GSM isn't up and running quite yet. Still on Beta, supposed to be live by early March. I'm hoping to get in on the beta testing though, I've got my GSM Ting sim card and an iPhone 5c waiting to go.
