Back in the early 70s, because I was a perfect child and she liked them, my mom let me go to an unchaperoned local concert of Gary Pucket and the Union Gap when I was maybe in the 8th grade. He was also my first album purchase I ever bought to play on my hand me down suitcase record player. For my next album purchase I brought home In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. Mom was shocked but never said a word. The rest is history - I now own the world's greatest $1500 stereo.  RIP.  To put this album into perspective, James Hetfield of Metallica was 5 years old.

My cousin spent all his paper route money on albums, I remember sitting in his room listening to that Iron Butterfly album when it first came out.  My brother and I borrowed it and brought it home, our parents were not impressed.

Of course, in later years there was the song's appearance on the Simpsons.

This song and the Beatles' Helter Skelter are the ancient ancestors of all today's metal genres. RIP.

Every time I hear this song, or mention of it, I'm reminded of one Saturday night on the way to the motocross track. My Dad was driving way too fast in his 74 Eldorado, 76 RM100 strapped in on the bumper racks, as we had that album in the 8 track, cranked.  I'm not sure why we were driving so fast, maybe just because, or maybe because my Dad was really anxious to get there and pound beers.

Those were indeed the days.

Did 74 Caddys have 8 tracks in 74? I had a Craig floor mount in my 68 Firebird back then that was good for something like 8 watts per channel.

Edit: Oh, the good old days of 8 tracks, I wonder why they went away?

Damn, I'm only a decade younger than Doug Ingle, I've lost half of the Moody Blues, and Chicago already. Not too much left out there.

A friend discovered In-a-gadda-da-vida when we were in high school. We were listening to it in my room when my very square dad walked by and said "hey, that's Iron Butterfly!"  Blew our minds. 

I hope there is a long organ solo at his funeral. And maybe drums. 

Occasionally, the wife and I would go to one of the local bowling establishments where there was still a jukebox of sorts.  After enduring some alleged "music" we found that said jukebox contained In-a-gadd-da-vida... the LONG VERSION!  We were cracking up listening to a few 12 year olds complaining, "what's that E36 M3!"

Haha, this exact thing happened to me also; my dad was a Pastor for 30 years so it surprised teenage me that at one point he was a hippy like everyone else of his generation.

I also had one of those under dash mount Craig players

Way back in the day, my friend and I went to see Ten Years After–looking online, must have been a reunion tour.

Anyway, we got there early so, of course, we hung out in the parking lot.

The dudes next to us (pretty sure it was a second-gen Camaro) had two cassette decks in/under the dash so they could rewind/cue up a tape while one was playing. 

Thinking back, I should have taken some pics.
