I got it out so fast that there were only a couple of drops of water in the battery compartment. I dried it off to the best of my ability, inside and outside. The phone is probably ok but when I put it on the charger it says "battery is required". Before I go buy a phone I'd like to have your input on: 1. whether or not the battery can recover; 2. if the phone lights up is that a good sign that it may be ok? My wife had to buy a new battery for her phone and it was quite pricy. My phone has been dropped hard many times. I'm surprised it has lasted me this long.
take it apart as much as possible and stick it in a bag of white rice. The rice will absorb the moisture out. Leave it for a day or two.
Remove the battery and put the phone in a ziplock bag full of dry uncooked rice for a few days.

The rice thing really works. My eldest dropped her cell phone in a snow bank in the woods a few years ago. When the snow melted we went back and found it 10 days later lying on the still soaking wet ground. 5 days in a bag of rice it was fine. Caveat, this was an older phone that had those strange vintage button things, no a touch screen smart phone.
You'll need two cups of dry white rice, cooking oil, and frozen veggies. Put one cup in a zip lock bag with the phone in it. Use the other cup, the oil, and veggies to make stir fry. EVERYONE WINS!

Thanks everyone. My step-son said he washed his in the machine. He took it apart and put it out in the sun for a couple of days. He said it worked but not all the functions worked as new.

I dont think your supposed to expose a smartphone to direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time, do the rice thing it should work

True story: I once washed and dried a digital camera battery in the laundry. Didn't discover it until I was folding the finished laundry. I attempted to charge it. It did not work.

That will forever be the answer in regards to anything that gets wet.
- Prevent rust? Keep it in white rice!
- Coolant leak? Keep it in white rice!
- Incontinent? Keep it in white rice!
I should think that brown rice would work just as well, along with jasmine rice, wild rice, Rice-a-Roni, Minute Rice, or anything with rice in it.
Had this happen years ago with a Nokia brick phone. Unfortunately mine was in there for about 45 minutes. The only thing it would do after drying was sizzle and pop.

We did the rice thing with one of my kids Nintendo DS. It really did work. 3 days later and it was going. It is still working to this day.
Key is get it in there right away. The longer the moisture stays in there, the less likely that it will recover.

Again, thanks to everyone for your advice. Most of it was right on the money. FWIW I did use brown rice.
I tried it yesterday morning with no change. I tried it again this morning and it turned itself on when I connected it to the charger. Also, the battery condition bar said it was fully charged. I made two phone calls on it with no change to the charge indicator. All my info. seems to be in tact.
