Most of the science says that's partly correct, but definitely not the whole story. Seems like there's a biochemical reason that people become addicted - it's like a "lock and key" type reaction - the drugs being a chemical mimic a neurotransmitter, which unlocks a receptor and BAM!

So, addiction is not a "weakness", just like mental illness is not a "weakness". There's chemistry involved.

FWIW prescription drugs have been killing a lot more people than illicit drugs the last few years.

Jesus christ. Am I missing something? You know a gram is nothing, right? Sounds like they're trying to link the stolen stuff with the meth and guns, when there's probably no connection.

Probably the same biochemical reasons that cause long-term depression and inability to deal with life in the first place. Just my 2¢ (and the voice of experience).

And part of the reason I stay the hell away from them. I've had some UGLY episodes in my life, plenty of things i'd like to forget. I know damn well I have access to everything under the sun (getting plugged in to the import scene does that around here) and if I wanted to, I could ruin my life instantly. I have too much I want.

To go to PT and excersize with assorted broken ribs, ankle ect I needed meds. A nice man with a cart full of pills showed up to find the right ones for me. Vicoden made me puke, percocet didn't do much of anything, but with two oxyconden I could run through a brick wall on fire. Like the sticker on the good doc's cart said, Rush is Right.

Vicoden made me sick too... along with dreams that would scare David Cronenberg. No way José could I be convinced to take oxycontin. It's one of the fastest addicting drugs there is, and with my addictive personality I'd probably be hooked after one pill.

Meth could be symptomatic of a larger issue though.....

I want to use meth long enough to lose 50 pounds and get all my overdue car maintenance done, but not long enough that my teeth start to fall out.

Change that to prescription amphetamines and 100Lbs for me. On a serious note I do need to get back on something for my ADD.

Make that Adderall.

It seems as if he might be a cleptomaniac. People that steal to support there drug habit do not hold on to items for a long time they sell or trade within hours of the theft.

True, but I, like Poop am one to not trust the media. They the stolen stuff though, likely linked to a methamphetamine issue.

My two buds who are both dead: the first one had an addictive personality. The second one, definitely not (and I knew him since we were about 10 so I had a long time to have found out if he had). But both went down the same road after that first snootful of coke yanked their lives off track. They threw away everything for that stuff. The stories I unfortunately could tell...

You're right.... meth is a HUGE hot button issue right now, and anytime anyone is caught with the tiniest bit of dust and they're a celebrity, it's all over the place. No one cares about 10's of thousands of dollars in stolen swag if there's a baggie of crystal to glom onto.

I've dealt with Meth addicts for years as a prosecutor. It's weird, because there seem to be two kinds. There are those who try it and go instantly all wild-eyed, crackhead for it. (Those are the one's who show up on the before/after mugshot pics and go from normal looking to toothless skelotons in a couple of months) When they talk about meth, they talk about it being the best high ever and get this really creepy, almost possessed look on their faces. Think Gollum from Lord of the Rings. But honestly, they seem to be a minority. The second type are people who started using small amounts primarily as a stimulant. (3rd shifters, truck drivers, etc.) They just slowly become dependant on it, probably the same way I'd have to admit I'm dependant on my morning coffee. Many of the second type will tell you they can quit anytime, but their treatment success rate says otherwise. Its nasty stuff. Its not necessarily the "one hit and you're an addict" stuff that its made out to be, at least not for everyone. The problem is that when you do get hooked, there's a chemical, physical and psychological dependance that's more intense than anything I've ever seen, and I was in law enforcement during the height of the crack "epidemic."

Obviously, some do. Hardcore crankheads don't hold onto 6-7 figure jobs very long.

I just think the jump from "He's got a night's worth of crank" to "drugs have ruined his life and he's stealing E36 M3 to support his habit" is silly.

Or he just got a sweet deal on some electronics. Either one makes a hell of a lot more sense than "I'm a millionaire but I only buy my crank a gram at a time."

Now you are just being silly, he is a millionaire, he doesn't need a sweet deal on electronics.

Him having wasted all of his money on drugs and resorting to stealing stuff to maintain a lavish lifestyle/drug habit is much more (IMO) within the realm of reasonably possible.

I won't hang w/ anybody suspect of meth, crack or coke. The couple who does a doob in the hot tub OK, the habitual pot head no. Had a lot of old friends stop over and wanna burn a joint, not my bag anymore, I may have to pass a drug test for my next job, not worth it... and everybody drug tests anymore. Had one manager tell me one of the biggest problems is finding workers that can pass a drug screen., geezus... what are ppl thinkin' anymore.

Meth and crack are career killers, weed is kid stuff as far as I'm concerned. I might be soundin' old here but beer is still my choice... but I can be boring as hell.
