I would second the whole trying out the camera first-hand thing. It's why I go to our local camera store (www.colonialphotohobby.com). I could probably find cheaper prices online, but getting to see and hold something first-hand is worth something. Plus their staff knows their stuff. Sometimes I have left spending more than I planned, but other times I have spent less.

As far as bags, I have a Tamrac bag that dates back 20 years. I still use it. Also, they have good customer service. A while back I had trouble figuring out which big bag would hold all my stuff, so I just called them. The nice lady there asked for the dimensions of my equipment and then recommended a particular bag. It has worked like a charm.

I will also add that the $75 Canon 50mm lens is a neat piece. It reminds me of high school photo class.

CrackMonkey I actually have one of the Sigma 70-300 APO lenses and it has been an excellent buy for me. Even better since about a month later the price of the lens went up about $40. I've actually gotten some spectacular shots with that lens. My general walk around lens is a Sigma 18-200.

just avoid modern samsonite peices. Had 2 cell phone carriers and a cammera case. All went to E36 M3 in no time flat. As a photo student, my current camera is Fuji S700. not a D-SLR, but only one step away. Works for me, waas low-priced, but has since been discontinued.
