Alright guys I have been looking for a mountain rig / bug out rig for a little while now. I have mostly been looking for an older full size SUV (Blazer, Bronco or Ramcharger). Well today I was poking around on craigslist here local and there is a '87 Bronco for sale for $850 OBO. It has a fairly huge smack in the driver door and looks like maybe some damage to the rear quarter and front fender. Ad says it runs but needs a new battery and radiator. It has a 5.0 with 4x4 and I am just now trying to get some more info on the rig.

Not looking for a pristine rig, whatever I get is going to get repainted some flat color and will be beat up in the mountains I am sure. So this may just fit the bill. I would want to replace the door for sure and possibly the fender and just push out the dent in the rear quarter.

Anyone know if the Bronco shares doors and fenders with any other Ford rigs? Are there any good inexpensive ways for beefing up the suspension and the like (parts from other Fords that will swap in)? How much computer control are we talking on the engines on these? I would really like to strip the thing back to bare basics so everything is dead simple. Any known problem areas to look at?

watch for rust of course. 1987 should be the first year of multi-port injection on these, so it will have more power than earlier ones in stock trim. Check for front end wear in the 'twin I beam" dealie. Broncos always felt much heavier than Blazers to me, don't really know why.....

This might a good place to start, Bronco Forum

Here is a picture that shows the body damage. Being OJ white I for sure would want to get a paint job. Looks like it is an XLT package. I have never been much of a Ford guy so this is new territory for me.

Something along these lines would be my ideal setup (though with doors)

Well keep on looking, but keep in mind, I pretty much have the F150 of the same build. Same Everything should be practically the same from the front bumper to the rear of the door. My 5.0 has over 200,000 on it and runs/tows great. Keep an eye on the rear main seal, they seem to be a problem spot, but not entirely too hard to replace. Kind of funny thing about those year F150s or Broncos. You could have a C6, E4OD, or 4R70W.

Good luck.

Apparently they can outrun a E36 M3load of cop cars.

Some guy local to me has been trying to sell one on Craigslist. What makes it unique is the 300 six/4 speed combo. Needs the typical rust spots addressed but didn't look hateful. I think he's been trying to get $1500 for it. Listed under either Lancaster or Harrisburg, PA Craigslist.

That truck will be slow but run forever. Also, that 4 spd has the ultra low "granny gear". I drove one for years and first gear wouldn't get you across an intersection. You had to start in second making it a 3 spd.

My Dad traded that truck to a neighbor for some crap. The guy used it, at 300k miles, to tow a huge boat. Legendarily tough truck.
