Yet another get off my lawn moment....

Just paid $4.79 for a dozen eggs. Nothing fancy, plain ol eggs. They were under $2 a few weeks ago. The new "cage free" law isnt helping.

What is everyone else paying?

Oof, looks like the local Kroger is $4.19 for a dozen Grade A Large.  We usually buy from Costco, but I'm not sure what the current price is for a skid'o'eggs...

40 Million laying hens were destroyed due to bird flu.

The cage free states are suffering the worst shortage and highest prices.

Looks like they are $4 at Wally World.

I've seen as high as $8, and as low of $3.50 lately in stores.

The current dozen from my 18 layers is over $100 right now, because they shut down in November from a synchronized molt combined with lack of daylight. I've gotten 6 eggs in the last 3 months, but they still want fed, watered, warmed.

Toyman nailed it, widespread bird flu is at the root of it.  $5 something for a dozen large store brand here yesterday, the store had plenty of eggs. The boutique brands were a lot higher.

Usually around Halloween I joke with teenagers about egging houses but now it's too costly.  We're further ruining the next generation.

Yah, it's crazy.  The worst part for me is that just as my little flock of 5 birds began to resume laying, predators have eaten all but two of them.  They've found a way into my fenced enclosure and even breached the enclosed coop.  I suspect raccoons with power tools.  I have taken measures.  Time will tell if they are sufficient.

Yeah, egg prices suck.

Under $4 at BJs.  Not political just bird flu again.  But does it really affect your life?  Not mine.  My 3 egg breakfast is still under a buck.  As far as protein goes that is a pretty good deal.

Egg prices look cheap to me at $5. per dozen which is more than I have paid so far. Why? Well I see how much time my next door neighbor spends on the care RevRico describes, and know his job pays at least $40 per hour. He gets a max of 5 eggs per day and they cost him $20. of his time to do it. Poor economics. Would be cheaper if we lived where they could be free range, but on an 16' x 38' urban back yard they cannot.

Ours are free run, fed a high quality, natural diet and allowed to just be chickens.

We get $6 cad per dozen and $9 cad per 18.

Same price as free-run eggs at the grocery store.

You can buy cheaper eggs but they don't taste right.

Last time the bird flu ran around British Columbia.  They sent an inspector to every poultry farm to check them out. If you want to spread a virus, that's about the best way possible.

The proper response this time is "stay the hell off my property".

Raccoons are the worst. My friends had raccoons dismantle and eat their chickens by pulling them through the wire piece by piece.

A dozen large eggs are $8.98 at my local grocery store.  That's an improvement over a month ago when they simply didn't have any.

My in-laws have chickens. Too many chicken for a retired couple with a hobby farm. I can't go over there without being sent home with 3 dozen eggs. We have about 7 dozen in the fridge right now. Because they're not an inspected producer, they don't want to sell them - they get given away.

We get our pork and beef from them as well. It's a great setup for us, I'll miss that little farm when it's gone. They've asked if we want to take it over...

Here in the mid Willamette valley of Oregon, egg prices peaked in mid to late December at.... i kid you not, 10.99 a dozen for regular store brand (not egglands best or anything) eggs. They went down to 6.99 where they have stayed since.

I've been getting semi-local "pasture raised" eggs and they continue to be right about $6.99/doz. I think they might have bumped a buck briefly.

I also just found out my cholesterol is up there a bit, so maybe a few less eggs. Crossing my fingers it's just the four months with no cycling.

I was recently reading up on cholesterol, and it turns out, for most, but not all, people, cholesterol you eat doesn't have a significant impact on your levels. Your liver makes most of it. If you eat too much sugar, your liver will make too much cholesterol. Also, take this fwiw, because n = 1, but I eat three eggs every day and my last cholesterol numbers were excellent.

Oh, on-topic, eggs are about $8/dozen in the Seattle area.

Vegan demand hiking the price?

Do Vegans have anything to do with the price of Wiper Blades? 🙄

Depends if it's the 4 cylinder or the V6.

I did not know about the connection between sugar in diet and cholesterol production from liver. berkeley. I eat a lot of sugar. And my cholesterol has always been between 213 and 278.

I went out to the coop one morning and found a what was the top of a chicken. Head and neck, back and wing feathers, basically a chicken hat. I suspected a raccoon.
Paid $9 for a tray of thirty this week.

Here's a summary of a book about cholesterol:

https://sobrief.com/books/the-great-cholesterol-myth

I also read about the sugar >> cholesterol connection elsewhere when I was freaking out about my 3-egg/day habit (until my blood work came back and was fine). I have a bit of a Cool Hand Luke relationship with eggs...

I have recently massively cut down on sugar, which has been hard at times because food companies put it in everything, and there are berkeleyed up corporate influences on food labeling, e.g., maltodextrin isn't considered sugar and doesn't have to be listed as such. Never mind that it is literally sugar: a polymer chain of glucose molecules.
