I'm putting the stock radio, cassette, and 9-band EQ back into my '88 626 because the dash just doesn't look right without it. (I will attempt to wire an external input into it so I can play my MP3s)

I've got a working original head unit but some of the things which are supposed to light up, do not. So I took it apart thinking I could unsolder some LEDs and replace with new LEDs, and I'd be good to go.

Weel, what I thought were LEDs are actually tiny incandescent bulbs with a green-tinted rubber sock over them:

How do I figure out what these are, spec-wise, and what LED bulb I can replace them with? Will pretty much any tiny LED that fits in the same spot work on account of it not requiring as much voltage?

I've got about 14 of these I have to replace with something else.

Also, does anyone have any bulk sources of small LEDs? $3/pair at Radio Shack seems steep.

Thanks!

Something like this for bulk source?

Jeff Anderson - jeffanderson@miata.net. He's been modifying Miata radios forever, and those bulbs look awfully familiar.

Digikey.com will have everything. allelectronics.com is a good source for small quantities, but is more "surplus" oriented. To go with LED's, you'll want to put a 1K Ohm resistor in series with them or you'll blow them out.

The Esprit had those lights too, with the green condom over them, used in the instruments. I replaced a couple with a bulb from the auto parts store and just carefully removed the condom from the old bulb and put it on the new one.
