My officemate was telling me today about a company that charges people money for taking care of their pets after the Rapture. Apparently, the business is pretty good. I'm just stunned by the cleverness of this plan. Since they truly believe this could happen, at least they get peace of mind that their beloved pets will be taken care of. But this guy will never need to lift a finger.

Edit: FGC just beat me to it.

This time it seems as though he's painted himself into a bit of an apocolyptacorner. Maybe someone who knows the bible better than me could spot some loopholes? I'm just curious what his plans for Sunday are.

Found a document that seems to suggest that Harold actually believes it, but thinks his empire still has work to do afterwards (why he'd hope that any of his employees would be "left behind" is mystifying..but so is this whole phenomenon in the first place).

In the parent article, CNN reports that many of the folks working at that place don't believe Camping's "prophecies" are correct..maybe he's not as insulated from his workforce as other CEOs...

Those guys scare me.

Me, too. That's why I own weapons.

ROFL! And here I thought it was just because you had so many of the damn things to wash.

Can't remember all the stations but one powerhouse sticks in my mind (maybe your referral), WWCR I think. Hosts like Jeff Bennett, Tom Valentine, William Cooper or AKA the black helicopter crowd. Ruby Ridge, Waco, UN/ NWO, Militia Movement, Illuminati were standard fare then. Plus lotta interesting stations I can't even remember now. Never bought a new receiver after that but now I listen to PD/ FD/ EMS calls when I'm online at Radioreference.com . I listen to my county's 911 calls and tip a metro reporter w/ any good leads. If you're still a radio guy, you might like this.

Hey, all the major broadcasters seem to be giving up on SW, seems the internet does the job with better audio quality.

Local TX may be all that's left to listen to! I've got a little palm-sized Grundig (that's just a Cheap Chinese E36 M3 thing with the Grundig name on it..grrr.) I can still find nice Cuban Jazz from Radio Havana, and occasionally find DeucheWelle, but a lot of the signals just aren't strong enough for a portable reciever to pick up anymore. And of course..I can still find Family Radio whining about the "rapture"..

Damn you Rudy Gulliani for running off the hookers and addicts so people feel safe here. What I can't figure out is how this idiot got a second chance. I grew up in a church where a lot of people belived him the first time. Sold everything they had and spent it on billboards, put down thier pets the day before, all kinds of crazy and yet he found another round of people to go with him this time

Wally, IMHO..the same stinking way he did it the first time. I'm not trying to slam anybody's religion here (and honestly, even a cranky old atheist like me understands that this "rapture" nonsense has as much to do with "real" Christianity as teenagers bending cars around telephone poles on the street has to do with "real" racing), but this is a cult. IMHO, this particular cult may be a little larger than others, since it's created as a tangent from an idea (mainstream Christianity) that has a little more respect in society, but at it's core, it's no different than the Raelian idiots or the Heaven's Gate morons.

Find lonely, desperate & disenfranchised people, and offer them a sliver of hope that they cannot find elsewhere. Charge them money or put them to work (barter) to inspire them to get more involved. Charge them even more to get closer to "The Truth" (as the cult leader describes it). Some people will go full tilt neurotic about reality, when they start to wonder if they've made a poor decision. That imagination often causes them to continue to participate (emotionally and financially, I'm reading stories elsewhere that Camping's ridiculous billboards were often purchased by people who liquidated their cars, and in some cases..their houses!) in the cult simply because they don't wish to admit to themselves that they've made such a huge mistake.

Live End-of-World Update!

It's turned Saturday in my timezone. So far, no horsemen or other Rapture indicators visible, but I'll keep you guys informed as/if the second coming progresses.

Mean time, I'm gonna keep working on this assignment due Monday, just in case...

I'm sorry... but the only thing I can think of when everyone starts talking about the rapture and all that jazz, is Steve Buscemi in Con Air... " he's got the whole world in his hands...."

The MTA, despite hosting the ads, says it does not expect the Rapture to affect service. "We intend to go on as scheduled," a spokeswoman said.
