My Wife has a 2005 Grand Caravan with a 3.3l engine and about 80k miles. We were out today and heading up a steep hill. The van held a lower gear and the engine was turning nearly 4000rpm. I glanced in the rearview and we were putting out a pretty good smoke screen. It was grayish in colour. I lifted and the smoke stopped right away. I wasn't able to repeat the problem and the engine isn't making any noises. There are no fault codes. The van has started using a little oil between changes but it passed it's last emmisions test with no issues.

I'm concerned but I'm not sure how concerned I should be.

Could you tell if it was black smoke (fuel) or blue smoke (oil)? Either one is possible, but the causes are are obviously going to be different.

Is that the first time its seen that kind of engine load for a while? Could just be shaking stuff out of the engine and exhaust- grey is the color of liberated carbon deposits.
