Watching P1 of the Chinese Grand Prix, suddenly I'm glad to live in a country with strict environmental regs. The air quality and smog is so bad that you can hardly see from one end of the straight to the other.

I agree. It might cost more to do business here because of it, but our life spans are getting longer with each passing year as long as we don't nom on Big Macs every twenty to thirty minutes. I can live with emissions controls if it helps keep me from having these blasted late-night asthma attacks.

Yep. Reminds of the time I was flying out of Mexico City, which is stuck in a basin surrounded by mountains, years ago. You could barely see the plane on the tarmac, until the people carrier got to about a couple hundred feet; then you could barely see the terminal. And this was a sunny day.

For all the purported evils of Capitalism, the Marxist/Leninist/Socialist/Fascist economies pollute worse. Why? The Tragedy of the Commons.

It' all a matter of degrees, man, you know that. Even I agree that some of that stuff makes sense, but when they start talking about taxing carbon dioxide, come on, now that's just stupid. The company I work for makes industrial power generation equipment, and the various regulations (esp Cali) are silly. Does it really make sense to spend another 1-2 mil to bring your CO2 emissions from 10 ppm to 5 ppm? Really? And you wonder why electricity is expensive in Cali.

Best part of living in L.A. is that I could get all my minerals in one breath. Mmmmm....carbon monoxide.

I would be more inclined to listen to discourse from environmentalists if it didn't consist of tripe like claiming businesses only want to "rape the land," and they didn't try to use the police power of the state to "punish" evil corporations instead of actually protecting the environment.

I don't have a problem with environmental protection laws. I have a problem with the environmental protection lobby.

Depends on what you think those carbon emissions are doing.....

As long as it's not in your back yard you probably could care less. Ask the folks who experienced first hand the effects of the coal, coke, steel mill, strip and mountain top mining era... and lately Marcellus shale gas drilling.

What about all those regs that came before that lowered it from 100 to 50ppm.. then 50 to 20ppm, then 20 to 10ppm.. Cali used to be pretty disgusting

I am certain that the smog wasn't due to carbon dioxide. It's not visible.

Smog surrounding most cities is photochemical smog containing among other things:

  • Aldehydes (RCHO)
  • Nitrogen oxides, such as nitrogen dioxide
  • Peroxyacyl nitrates (PAN)
  • Tropospheric ozone
  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

Health Effects:

Smog is a serious problem in many cities and continues to harm human health. Ground-level ozone, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide are especially harmful for senior citizens, children, and people with heart and lung conditions such as emphysema, bronchitis, and asthma. It can inflame breathing passages, decrease the lungs' working capacity, cause shortness of breath, pain when inhaling deeply, wheezing, and coughing. It can cause eye and nose irritation and it dries out the protective membranes of the nose and throat and interferes with the body's ability to fight infection, increasing susceptibility to illness. Hospital admissions and respiratory deaths often increase during periods when ozone levels are high.
