Met Dan Gurney, but that was at a race track, specifically Topeka on the afternoon before Fangio won Toyota's first GTP race. Gurney was the Team Manager.

I got backstage and met Ted Nugent about 35 years ago, back before he became famous for being a blowhard. We're talking back when the encore song was "Papa's Will." I told him I was his biggest fan and he said: "You've obviously never met my mother."

Because the topic of conversation was the "us vs. them" approach he takes toward politics. If I didn't vote for Obama, I'm obviously an anti-abortion, anti-woman, religious zealot, and Romney's +1 cheerleader.

For a guy who I've heard celebrate individuality and free-thinking, for him to basically say "These guys are on my team, and those guys are on your team, and if you're on that team, I'm not interested in what you have to say about anything" was really disappointing.

I probably thanked him 20 times for taking the time to respond.

I don't think I've met anyone remotely close to an idol.

Both are far from idols but both are definitely odd places, both documented on the forum:

At the first motorsport event I entered a hillclimb at Harewood in 1994 I was parked next to Alan Staniforth! He'd given up building his own cars by then and was running a modified FF2000 (Continetal over here)

I gotta meet Goldberg. We actually went to school together, but we have never met. Oddly, we are LinkedIn buddies.

I grew up on Long Island and lived near Dee Sider. I once saw him driving a high-top conversion van. It was so cool.

Last night I shook Dave Wakeling's hand. That was kinda cool. Great show, too.

Also, a little more about that. Yes, I'm definitely in the non-worship camp. Just because someone's famous doesn't mean they can walk on water. At the same time, I have met lots of well known people, mostly in racing (duh) and music. Some are kinda tool-like, while others have become good friends.

Here's a quick, funny story. When the SCCA Runoffs first moved to Topeka, the media did a dinner with Kathleen Sebelius, at the time governor of Kansas. She came across as a nice, genuine person. While hanging out, she started telling us how she can see the capitol from her backyard. Did we want to see? So, two minutes later Steven Cole Smith and I are following the governor of Kansas through some bushes so we can crouch just right to see the top of the capitol building.

The next day, she was at the track and was set to introduce Chris Economaki. She obviously wasn't a big race fan, but realized he was a big deal. Just before the introduction, she made eye contact with me and walked over: Hey, I know his basic history, but anything else I should know about this guy? We chatted for a bit, she did a very nice job on the introduction, and then a guy in a suit whisked her away in a P71.
