My brother-in-law had an incredible idea. Since I'm looking for a more immersive travel experience (rather than a guided tour and buffet dinners) he suggested I get hooked up with a humanitarian effort. He mentioned that there are websites that help you get donated funding, shipping of supplies, etc, but my google-fu is failing me.
Anyone know of some websites that link Humanitarian organizations with individuals?
What do you define as a "humanitarian effort"?
If you just google "humanitarian efforts overseas", you get a lot of responses.
P.S. Hope you're doing well. Haven't heard from you in a while.
Doing well, thank you. Definitely on the mend big time.
I did a google search, but it pulls up tons of junk with redirects. The other thing is, since I don't know any of these millions of humanitarian groups, how do I know they're any good?
I was hoping someone knew a good site with reputable stuff.
Its like doing a google search for "Miata parts." You get results like "MazDudes" and "JDMsters." I was hoping someone could say, "one of the best ones is Rock Auto." I just don't know a scam from a truly humanitarian group.
Don't know whether either does anything like what you want, but the first two names which spring to mind are the Peace Corps, and Habitat for Humanity.
Excellent idea, by the way. Seems like a phenomenal way to go interesting places, meet interesting people, and do some good while you're at it.
In reply to Ransom:
I think Peace Corps is a long-term thing but not sure. Habitat is a great idea.
One of my favorite podcasts, Stuff You Should Know, has traveled with and continues to support Cooperative For Education. Seems like a great program.

A few friends did the Peace Corp thing for a while. They have both good and bad things to say overall. I can get you in touch with them if you're interested.
What I really wanted to say is that you're a really cool guy and I hope everything is going well for you despite everything.
If you can get into Peace Corp as a grown adult you'll do much better than kids straight of college. Young women tend to have the worst experiences with Peace Corp, young men run into a lot of violence from muggings and such, but I've heard generally positive things from folks in the 30's and 40's who did it.

Budapest to Bamako Rallye.
Usually runs in January.
It' a charity rally that starts in Budapest, and you drive through southern Europe and on through Northern Africa. You can bring school/hospital supplies to schools/hospitals along the way and donate your car at the end. (I have people who can help with the purchase of a car in Hungary)
IF you buy a car (like an ambulance, police car, school bus) and donate it (to a hospital, police station, school) in Bamako at the end then your admission is free!

My cousin did peace corps twice so I tapped his brain. As far as he knows, the shortest commitment you can do is 27 months, but he put me in contact with some of his "peeps."

I appreciate it. All the support really means a lot.

I served for 3 years overseas with Habitat for Humanity, and did a lot of work with the Peace Corps. My daughter taught in Korea for a year.
What would you like to know? (Your question is so vague and general that it almost doesn't exist)
