Even ignoring the liability that you can never completely waiver away and the financial costs of increased insurance premiums or lower interest, there's a tremendous emotional/mental cost to other people who are present when an accidental/preventable death happens. Survivor's guilt is a real thing.
That exact thing led to an air show being canceled for several years here, and is why I will probably never again attend another one (long story, but they did not account for the possibility of a survivable crash in planning the event, so one that should have been wasn't).

I think the problem with the "It's my life, so you should let me risk it in any way I want" philosophy is that it ignores the costs to the other people around of a serious injury or death. Even ignoring the liability that you can never completely waiver away and the financial costs of increased insurance premiums or lower interest, there's a tremendous emotional/mental cost to other people who are present when an accidental/preventable death happens. Yes we used to live with much less safety gear but that's not a desirable state to return to.
Oh I understand survivor's guilt. When I returned from my 68-69 tour of Vietnam 1/2 of the pilots and crews didn't. Those of us that did were eaten up pretty badly. Made worse by flying off the ship 2 days before it reached port to land at a near empty base.
