scrap. i turn in lots of it. sometimes i pick crap up on the side of the road, most of the time it comes from work(aluminum window frames, lots of old faucets). i just turned in 34 pounds of brass, 34 pounds of copper, 50 pounds of automotive wiring. i have probably 400# of aluminum sitting here because i've been hoarding it until i got a truck full, and i just did a window job where all the windows in the house were thick old aluminum frames. i paid for my 5 speed 99% rust free texas c1500 with scrap money, as well as my rambler, my 68 c20, and lots of other goodies.
that and i part crap out and sell parts. but the older i get the less i care for tearing apart greasy old rusty crap to get some parts i want and make a hundred bucks. unless it's going to be really lucrative or have something i need to have, i'm considering getting out of the parting out business. i bought a $600 big block suburban though. sold the engine with bent valves, trans, and t-case for $700, got brand new tires and wheels for my c20, new battery for my 1500, gave my FIL the frame, got $238 for the body in scrap, and still have a beautiful 3.73 locking full floating rear axle sitting here. or the $425 80 Z28 that i turned into $1700 in part out goodness.
