oops.
That's from a video game BTW (you can tell by the name tag you can see hovering over the plane)
The question of course is: could an F35 actually do that? I think almost certainly no. If you could cut the power to zero during the flip maybe, but even still, I don't think the lift fan has near enough thrust to counter act that drop.
LOL! I don't play video games and didn't really see the graphs on the bottom of the screen. I still don't see the name tag mentioned. Modern game graphics are amazing.
I think you're right tho. It seems as soon as the thrust is pointing 'down', the plane would make a bee-line into the deck.
One F35 variant is VTOL, not just STOVL

It just might be possible, look carefully at what he did, the lift fan wasn't doing much work. He transitioned from VTOL to forward flight while doing the frontflip. If the fan lift could be killed fast, and the rear nozzle pointed back while the engine is brought up to full power rapidly (what kept it away from the carrier deck) it could work...it would be batE36 M3 crazy to even think about trying that though! I think the biggest problem is that the game looks a bit optimistic about gravity and the plane's power to weight ratio.
I'm thinking that Ian might want to get his eyes checked after mistaking that for real footage.
I'd agree that that move might be doable IRL, given a bit more altitude to play with.

Tisk..Tisk.., ye of little faith in Maverick.
(P.S. I went back and edited out "& Goose", B'cause #1 he's dead and #2 he don't fit in the damn plane anyway.)

Like I said, it's pretty poor quality, so it looked real. I have no idea what any non-car video games look like, nor do I really care. Just thought it was a funny video. Would probably have been better for the gif thread if I had any clue about how to make and post a gif.
