This sounds too weird to be true. Sounds like a practical joke and it's not even April 1st. Can it be possible to go from no F1 races in this country to maybe two? http://www.racer.com/formula-1-looks-set-to-race-in-new-jersey-beginning-in-2013/article/214984/

There has been talk of F1 in the greater NY area before. It is a potential market of 25-30 million population nearby. I wouldn't be too suprised if it happens.

Oh not this crap again! Bernie, what are you smoking?

I certainly hope it happens as Jersey is a lot closer than Texas, but it really should be held at one of America's great tracks. I think Road Atlanta should update to FIA series 3 standards and petition for an F1 race. That would be stellar.

NASCAR was trying to get a track built in the NYC area about 10 years ago and it went nowhere.

a neat way to do F1 in that area would be to make it a street course in Manhattan with one leg going thru a tunnel and coming back across one of the bridges.. or maybe do it around and thru Central Park..

So long as those jersey shore twerps aren't involved it'll be fine. V8 supercars, F1, isn't DTM coming here too?

America's broadening it's racing pallette, no?

I love the idea of F1 close enough to me that I can drive there by getting up early... but I hate the addition of a street circuit to any racing schedule. They should combine Thunderbolt & Lightning into the 4 mile "full course" as the original plans had so it has the length for an F1 race and do that. It is a nice facility, smooth, lots of runoff and the F1 revenue even for a one shot deal would save it from it's current financial woes. Bernie will never go for it though - he wants the glitz of NYC. Millville certainly ain't that.

How are they going to fit a Jersey race into the schedule? They had lots of trouble even fitting in Austin.

I'm not holding my breath till this deal goes thru.

There are major concerns that several current tracks will exit the schedule because of financial issues.

The FIA, FOTA and Bernie all want a full schedule to maintain projected revenue streams. I read somewhere that the WSJ noted a press conference was set for 10/25 to release more details and (possible) support from the state of NJ and the governor.

I'm not holding my breath either..............

The same state of NJ that has trouble paying it's workers and stopped work on several needed construction projects is going to pay for an F1 race? He does realize that everyone is going to come back to NYC to eat and sleep like they do for every other event right.

As much as I'd like one in the area I can't picture where they could have a decent one in NYC. I just keep having flashbacks to the God- awful Meadowlands "Grand Prix" that Cart ran a few times.

Wally, you may be jumping to conclusions.

If NJ offers support, it need not be financial. How 'bout we wait for more details before calling-out the attack dogs?

With Bernie it's always financial support.

That's why Indy's no longer on the schedule, they wouldn't continue to pay the extortion fees, I mean the licensing fees.

Apparently, noone has learned a thing from the F1 events at Indy (or anywhere else in the U.S.) and everyone is totally oblivious to the way Bernie operates. I guess you throw enough money in someone's face and their brain just shuts down. Seriously people, those who do not study history are condemned to repeat it, etc, etc. Extortion is the appropriate word to use here.

In reply to ncjay:

It's not extortion as no one is forced to embrace Bernie's schemes.

It does, however, require a "special" person to believe one can pay those exhorbitant fees and still make a profit.

Who's the bigger fool?

The fact that F1 is looking at America again says to me that F1 is hurting for cash.

Well, the official announcement was made this afternoon. The outdoor press conference was scheduled for 2PM; I stumbled across it about 15min. in.

A few observations:

  • NO public funds are to be used.

  • There's a tremendous amount of co-operation between the affected municipalities.

  • The track layout looks real interesting, potentially very fast in some areas and uses existing roadway. Lots of elevation changes, too.

  • Chris Christie is awesome. The way he handled a nimby-minded local journalist was priceless; sharp wits and good humour are great tools.

  • In all, it looks to have great potential. But, I'm still not holding my breathe and if it happens, I'm spectating via broadcast. Even an F1 event isn't enough to entice me back into NJ.

According to the story, there's a 10 year deal. Anyone think it will last that long? Just because they say no public funds will be used, they still have plenty of time to go, "Ooops sorry, we didn't see this problem coming up, so now we have to use money to fix this, build that, etc." Who's paying to build an entire garage for pit lane? Beyond all the typical F1 B.S. and politics being played, I seriously look forward to F1 racing in both N.J. and Austin. It's just hard to be optimistic knowing Bernie's track record.

For those of you on Facebook, there's a: "Friends of Formula 1 Weehawken New Jersey" with lots of updates.

I'm not so much a big fan of F1 these days, but as an NJ resident, I'd be interested to see how this plays out.

IMHO, THE place for F1 racing in the US is Watkins Glen! (but I know it'll never happen again)
