With all the free services on the internet, FB, Google, WebMD, Many Forums, .... If you are not paying for it, your data is the product. Nobody should be surprised. The services you get and the data you expose can be valuable or complete garbage. Terms of service and Privacy statements are usually not meant to be read or easily understood. Just know that any data you share is vulnerable and is out there forever. Be sure to include enough random garbage and mis-information to keep them guessing. wink

Facebook's data collection goes far beyond what you choose to post. That's the sketchy thing here. They're accumulating and combining data you don't realize, and without your consent. If they were simply tailoring the ads on their platform on the level of "this person posts cat memes, so let's sell cat food", it wouldn't be a problem. But there's demographic and location data being pulled out all this and amalgamated with all sorts of browsing and purchasing behavior. And you don't get to choose what is private. They'll track you if you have opted out and if you have location services turned off - you really don't get an option.

That's the problem. Not what you post to facebook or choose to share. It's what they're collecting beyond that, with or without your permission. If you think otherwise, then you're the one who's naive.

Quoted for truth.

Moreover, it's a bigger deal what FB shares with Amazon shares with Target shares with Amalgamated WidgetCo what each of them knows about any given individual. You can paint a pretty thorough picture of an individual, and you can look at behaviors of profiles of enough people to know how to manipulate an individual of a given profile. It won't work every time, but even spam and mailed circulars get enough reaction to be profitable.

This is one of the reasons that I never opt for the "login with FaceBook" options lots of retailers have these days.  Your info is out there and you really can't do much about it but I like to feel like I am making it a little harder for them.

They should hire somebody who is really good at securing private info to handle all of that data.

You know, like the VA.

Its "Minority Report" algorithms they are running with the data.    Like Artificial Intelligence stuff.

I figure everything everyone types on the internet is analyzed by someone and conclusions are filed for either immediate use or for a rainy day.

20 years ago it was revealed that NSA was recording all USA phone calls to/from overseas.

Do you think they stopped?  Or maybe the big thumb drive in Utah is collecting even more data now?

The ignorant ones are the FB people who are selling your data.

Ignorant?  I think "malicious" is the word you're looking for.  I don't believe for a moment that they don't know exactly what they are doing and whether or not is in compliance with the law.

5 years ago it was revealed the nsa was sucking up everything digital. 3ish years ago, it was revealed that not only is the CIA doing the same thing independently, but also working on modifying devices at the production level to make it easier on them, and spying on their own allies. Right NOW the UK is publicly pushing facial recognition software to their nationwide surveillance camera system for better tracking "of criminals". As of 2017, both the UK and Japan are publicly experimenting with using AI to predict crimes before they happen. And none of that is touching the also public and extremely abused Five Eyes global network between the US, UK, AU, NZ and another country I don't remember off the top of my head, mostly to get around the laws forbidding spying on your own citizens in those countries.

Yet talking about these things, despite them being publicly acknowledged, still gets you labeled as a crackpot conspiracy theorist because, honestly I don't think people want to accept the truth at this point.

Facebook is really the least of our concerns about privacy in this day and age, but they make a good target for public outrage because they sell the data instead of saving it to invent problems later.

So, Facebook has been lying about a lot over almost the past decade.

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/12/20/facebook_disaster/

What else might they have been lying about? Possibly when they repeatedly said that their app wasn't listening to audio in the background?

Also did anyone see anything about this on TV news channels today? I didn't, but I only watched a little. You'd think that the biggest corporate scandal to happen in the information age, affecting 1/4 of the planet's population, would be bigger news.

All of the tech companies are doing it. Every single last one.

Like Rico said, governments are doing the same thing.

Facebook is just the most incompetent at hiding it and government(s) don't give two E36 M3s about your privacy rights.

I still hope fb dies from this since facebook is pretty much the worst damn thing to happen in the last 20 years as far as tech stuff goes.

The other country is Canada.

In some ways this is a bigger deal than the mass surveillance by the various TLAs. When companies increase what data they're collecting, they're also increasing the data available for the TLAs to collect. Perversely, these megacorps are also practically more accountable to the average Joe. It should be a lot easier to sue them into oblivion for this, and there wasn't even a secret court making secret decisions for secret reasons that technically authorized this, it was 100% illegitimate, in practically every jurisdiction.

I wouldn't overlook the fact that FB is "the internet" to a lot of folks. They get a huge amount of info that would at least be slightly more difficult to get via other means, and they get it on A LOT of people.
