I remember reading a magazine article that the Mustang with the RB26DET in it didn't have enough power to drift like they wanted to, so they had another one with a 302(?) to do the drifting scenes.

I somehow thought that was weird.

It was a 351, and yes, it's true. Not weird at all though, go to a FOrmula D event. Nearly every car is V8 powered (except Mad Mike's 4-rotor FD).

These movies would be fun if there were actual stunts instead of overwhelming cg

Late 70's car movies are so much better.

You should watch 5 then, no CG stunts.

Yeah, but an RB26DET boosted properly would make a '68 Fastback drift just fine. That's what's weird, why they couldn't get it to drift.

Probably because the engine-swap car was the "hero" car and had to look good.

Correct. A lot of the "hero" cars are built and/or owned by private shops and enthusiasts. So doing stunts with those cars wouldn't fly. The studio builds "clones" of the hero cars and uses them for pretty much any shot that involves actually driving.

As an example, all of the Yenko Camaros in the 2nd movie that are actually being driven are clones with only V6s under the hoods.

In reply to Sky_Render:

There's no V6 69 Camaro's man. The online film I saw on that movie showed there were a few stunt cars with crate 350's (which they used in nearly everything, including the stunt Challengers) and the one that got launched into the boat is actually a fiberglass push car.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion...

I find these movies very enjoyable, the fiance enjoys them, which is a win if I can get the old lady to watch! They arent masterpieces but great action flicks with cars and always get me giddy. It sparks my interest into doing something new to my car or a project.

I do wish they would go back to the style of the original and bring Johnny Tran and his $100k S2000 back.

Exactly, who goes to these movies expecting them to be accurate and believable, they are 2 hours of escape/

Entertainment value only, unless you believe in Family Guy and Wrestling.

It's a shame that they are up to 6 movies in the F&F franchise, but there isn't even a sequel to "Death Proof."

That said, I will probably watch F&F6 when it comes to Netflix.

You made it through the worst of it. When Ludacris is the best actor in a movie, it doesn't have a whole lot going for it. Watch the next 3.... they're lots better.

F&F is just car porn. You should hold the script, plot, and realism of action scenes to about the same level of believability as the average porn flick.

LIke McQueen does in the Mustang during the chase scene in Bullitt?

I enjoy the F&F franchise for entertainment, laughs, and some OK action sequences, as well as stupid over-the-top ridiculousness. I would agree that Tokyo Drift and F&F 5 are the best ones so far. I will go see the next one in the theater. Why? Because MkI Escort.

Tokyo Drift sucked. Not even close to realistic. I lived in Japan as a DoD dependent and went to a DoDDS school. Knew some of the guys in high school into the real drift scene. Stuff didn't happen in the shopping districts of downtown Tokyo. It was mostly in deserted industrial areas late at night or near certain onramps/offramps on certain highways. Nobody is drifting through the intersection in Shibuya unless they're trying to commit mass murder. It could have been so much better without being such utter bullE36 M3.

In reply to mpolans:

Yes because all car movies have been realistic. People really do hijack 18-wheelers while they're driving with harpoon guns, or break into abandoned military bases for a drag race, or pop up draw bridges a little for a jump at the end of a street race, or smuggle money back into Mexico with highly identifiable collector/racing cars, or street race for pinks in Rio with Dodge Chargers against 911 GT3's, or smuggle booze into Texarkana with a decoy Trans Am running block, or chase bad guys through San Fran into a gas station, or street race in a Porsche 10 seconds after driving out a dealership window, or...

I have a feeling you hate action movies in general.

I've robbed many banks and been on many jewel heists. Snatch, Italian Job, and all the "Ocean's" movies are AWFUL. Not realistic at all.
