I recently got a job working on the Gulf oil spill and will be spending 2 weeks in Houma every month. Assuming I have any free time, what can I expect to find there? I spent a little time in New Orleans and Buris a couple of years ago but that's my only experience down there. What can the GRM hive mind tell me about that place?

Whatever you do, do NOT take someone up when they invite you to a "bourre" (boo-ray) game. You will find yourself naked, carless and homeless if you do.
Haha, thanks. These are the things I need to know.

It's a variant of Hearts. I grew up playing it casually. Some of my relatives play it with a passion. It's similar to dominoes in Detroit.
Surprisingly enough, I was stationed near there for 2 months in the military. The place was desolate pre-Katrina, so imagine there's not much going on now. I remember a nightclub that was OK and a book store. We quickly figured out it was better to save the time and gas and just drink in the hole-in-the-wall in Lockport (where we were).
It's very Cajun. So, everyone has 1 of maybe 3-5 last names. It's pretty small, so natives are probably related to half the town.
Food: It's Cajun country, so be on the lookout for some good gumbo, jambalaya, seafood, boudan, etc.
Religion: It's about 90% Catholic. They've got a very vibrant Catholic community there. If you're interested, let me know. I've got contacts there.
Nightlife: I'm not particularly the one to ask, but it should have some good Cajun and Zydeco music here and there.
Misc: Houma is about 1 hour's drive from New Orleans.
Racing:
The closest racetrack that I know of is called No Problem Raceway in Belle Rose, LA. I know there is autocrossing in Belle Chasse, LA, probably about 1-1.5 hours away. I'm not sure if there's anything closer.
