I did it. It was a total impulse but it was the last few minutes of an Ebay auction. $1385 bought me this:
It runs and drives. That's all I know.
Well, I also know it will be getting and LSx/T56 swap.
Boo yah.

I always figured those things would be God's Own drift machine. I don't know if you can get enough steering angle out of them, though.

They might be a good choice to test Paul Van Valkenburg's suggestion of using a dirt track straight axle in a drift machine, if only for the extra redneck factor.

Tomorrow
Went to get it today. Its really not bad. I expected the worst. It was at a really ghetto dealer in Trenton NJ, but they are really nice folks. Plenty of expected body rust, but surprisingly no frame rot. Really solid bones.
Tranny is slipping in reverse and the fluid looks like Hershey's chocolate syrup. Its OD, so I assume 700r4. I guess it could be 200-4r. I forgot to look. This might be a good opportunity to pop my cherry on rebuilding an automatic. There is a rusted break in the rear brake lines so that needs to be addressed, but other than that I really think it could hit the road soon while I acquire parts.
Mostly everything works. PW, PL, runs smooth. Looks like a bunch of vacuum lines were replaced. AC doesn't blow cold (no shock there), and one tire has some dry rot.

I think the 70-72 is one of the sexiest, but I really like the boxy style of these last-gen malibu versions. Another neat thing is that the front bodywork is all interchangeable, so if I want to I could make it an El Cutlass, or El Regal.
