Been seeing all these things about cheap sim cockpits and caught a couple in the last GRM issue. I've been race simming for years and finally decided to make something for myself. Heres a little bit of ideas for those who want to make something.
I've never built anything before (apart from computers) and don't know how to weld so I started with some 1 1/2" PVC and some plywood and things got a little out of hand. It's not done yet, but this is what came out with about 100$ and no experience:
Basically just a buttload of PVC pipe and plywood, and the donor seat under the cover is from a 1985 Isuzu Impulse Turbo junker that finally kicked on me. The seat works well, it was all leather with the adjustable lumbar, tilt and side supports.
The computer specs btw are: Athlon 64 X2 4200+ 2gig DDR2 @ 800mhz Nvidia Motherboard Sound Blaster Audigy 2 7.1 Geforce 8800GT 512mb w/factory overclock
The accessories are what really make it and I urge anyone making a cockpit to go all out for the largest screen they can find. Personally on this build I have: 22" Dell screen at 1680x1050 Logitech G25 racing wheel Logitech G15 keyboard Microsoft Sidewinder gaming mouse Logitech cordless rumblepad 2 Logitech X540 5.1 system (Sub behind seat, do this, trust me)
Anyway just some inspiration (or possibly laughs) for those who want to build a simming cockpit.
