My eight year old has been asking for a FitBit. For the past few weeks, she has been carrying around her mother's old phone and counting her steps. I'd like to get her something wearable. Is there a good basic fitness tracker for kids? Preferably something simple that doesn't need to be paired with an app or website.

I don't know if you guys have them in america? But my partner and I got our niece a leapfrog leapband, it's a pretty cool little gadget, she loves it.

If it's strictly for counting steps (and I'm not sure why an eight-year-old would be interested in counting steps, but that's not the issue here), then there are cheaper ways than a FitBit, such as a simple 3D pedometer which you carry in your pocket. FitBits are way over-trendy these days. They're also over-priced. Annie bought one for me (against my wishes) after I had an SVT episode back in January and wound up in the hospital (SVT not being Special Vehicle Team). Anyway, the one with the heart rate monitor and other bells and whistles was around $100, I think. She wouldn't tell me. I wear it on my right wrist, because I prefer an analog watch on the other. I occasionally check my daily steps and heart rate. But I'd say FitBits are over-rated and generally worn by folks more interested in showing that they're wearing one rather than actually using it for intended purpose.
I'd love to see the results of my 3 year old on any given day.
Fitbit is good but kinda more advanced for that young age. I would recommend getting a Garmin vivoft jr. or any one from these trackers. Your kid will really love their vivoft.
Both of my kids have fitbits. Wife also bought them a case with 12 or so different bands in different colors and styles. They can change bands to match their outfits(girls). The coolest thing I saw about the fitbit is the fact that its paired to their phones somehow. They can see texts on the fitbit that get sent to their phone, so we can contact them when they are in school. Great feature for arranging pickup times and such. I say spend the money and buy the kid a real one. Its worth it.
I got my kids FitBits from here shopgoodwill.com. They were cheap and since the kids stopped using them after a couple of weeks we were not out much money.
