This seems maybe not so good -
Cisco recently announced that it will be exiting the Flip business. Support will continue within the terms of the Flip Video warranty, which is 1 year from the purchase date. FlipShare and technical support for Flip video cameras will continue until December 31, 2013.
Is there something better out there that drove Flip out of business?
In reply to Scott:
They've covered that a few times on "All Things Considered"- basically, it was a market that Cisco isn't normally part of, they did well enough, but to continue isn't someting they want to do- so that they can focus more on the core. One of the major factors are camera phones, even the low quality ones take video quite well. Well enough that it will be tough to have a product that ONLY takes video.
The way I see it, if you can get one, cheap, due to the discontinue, go for it.
On a different question- of the two flips- is the normal one good for autocrossing/track, or is the HD version a better one to hold out for?
I thought a few of this group used the Flip for thier cars.

Keith has a Flip that he uses for in-car. Don't recall which model he uses, but it produces some cool videos, especially after he did the wide angle hack.
In reply to dyintorace:
That hack, I would LIKE to know more about it. It's quite possible we have one of those lenses- bought some time ago for an older camera we have. Looks quite similar. Would be very cool.
I have a Flip but haven't done the hack yet. Keith has. Here's a link to an old post of his about the hack. Scroll down some.

I'm really happy with how it works in-car. It's so easy to upload the video that I'm a lot more likely to use it than other setups. I have the skills and software to do real video editing, but it still takes a while. Plugging the Flip in, cropping the video and uploading is just so quick.
Image quality is really good, and the wide angle mod is just a matter of gluing on an adapter ring. If you can't find one of the lenses with the ring, I have a few of the rings left. You get about three with each lens, and I bought both a wide angle and a telephoto one. I think the latter ran $5.
Mine's the Flip Ultra HD, I think.
You can see the results in my YouTube channel - the videos from the Targa race are a Canon DV camcorder, the track videos are the Flip.

My biggest compliant is that it doesn't have a separate audio input, which I'm going to need this fall.
You'll need to log in to post.
