So I spent the holiday sanding and staining my living room floor. Everything went great until I got up this morning. The stain is still not completely dry after 8 hours. This is Minwax oil stain that says 8 hour dry time. Yes I wiped off the stain after applying but now I’m wondering if I wiped it enough.

Should I just give it the day to dry or should I rewipe it. Thanks!

At this point anything that wipes up isn't doing the floor any favors so I'd give it a shot.

Remember that the "8 hours" listed is under nominal conditions.  If you're like most of us the floor may be colder than normal and have a slowed dry time.

I did our floor this time last year...In fact I think I was staining when the clock hit midnight on new year. I had the same issue with the first coat of minwax polyurethane, it took about twice as long to dry.

If you can wipe again so it, but I suspect that the stain will be sticky now and will just pick up fuzz. Test wipe in an inconspicuous area. If it's sticky I would just crank up the heat and wait.

For the poly application I highly recommend using something like this rather than a brush:

I wiped it down without issue but I’m going to let it dry all day and maybe poly tomorrow..

i was hoping to put a couple coats of poly on today but that’s the way it goes.

FYI there's no way in hell I'd put down poly unless you can open up all the windows, or better yet, just leave for a couple days. Granted, I did about 1000 sq-ft, but even wearing a mask & having the windows open, I'm convinced that killed a lot of brain cells.

Hope you don’t me picking your brain. Is that a lambs wool pad or foam? I used lambs wool to apply the stain but I think a rag would have worked better. Did you use water based ploy? I was planning on using Minwax water based ploy but the label doesn’t say anything about using it on floors just furniture. What poly did you use? Did you lightly sand between coats?
