9/1/15:

McCarran Airport at 5:30. 6:50AM flight to SEATAC, arrive 9:20. PO picks me up, gets off-airport and lets me drive. This is a 25-year-old Acura Integra sedan. If you didn't know much about cars, you might think it's 6-8 years old.

Lunch eaten, money changes hands, sign papers, and I'm off.

Yesterday's map

The coast is foggy and rainy, as expected. Still gorgeous, and worth going out of the way for.

Today's drive is to Winnemucca NV. Car photos coming soon.

Good call on favoring the coast over I-5

Driving down the 101 is worth the extra time involved. Lots of great scenery along that road. Enjoy the trip!

My wife and were watching one of her tv dead last night that was focused on Route 66 hotels. The idea of a southwest road trip is pulling hard. The maveric across America tour has me thinking I need to find my own emission casualty California car and take the really long way home.

Here here! Missouri's rust is really tiring too.

When I get some money together for a truck we were thinking the same thing.

Day two: Corvallis, OR to Winnemucca, NV.

Day 2 map

Corvallis to Bend, OR is still astonishingly beautiful. I even saw the sun for a moment or two.

Once you get past Bend, US20 and Oregon 78 and US95 are some of the most boring roads I've ever driven. Feels like they were drawn on the map with a straightedge. Probably were. There were 30 mile stretches where I swear I did not turn the steering wheel more than 2 degrees.

Nonetheless, the State of Oregon has seen fit to put a 55mph limit on these roads. Seeing as I'm riding on sketchy plates, I set the cruise on 64, put The Club on the steering wheel, and took a nap.

(Not really. Don't try this at home.)

At one point, there were no other cars for miles, so I laid into it. GPS-indicated 95mph, the Acura still feels smooth as glass. Especially given the General Tire CrapMaster tires. But hey, there aren't many choices in 195/65R14 these days!

When I crossed into Nevada, the limit became a more reasonable 70mph. Yay for rational limits!

Only negatives so far:

Frameless door glass looks really cool. However, when a car ages and the regulator gets sloppy, the windows don't close properly at any speed above 50mph.

There's some slop in the wiper linkage, too. Driver-side wiper sweeps well onto the A-pillar.

PO was a large lady, and the driver's seat is just plain shot, with torn upholstery to boot. Bought a cheap fleece blanket to pad it for now. Finding a new seat will be a challenge. Brown upholstery only came with Honey Beige paint. Dunno what I'll do about this.

Today was not fun. More of absolutely nothing to see. Bought some 85 octane without thinking, and it dropped the MPG from 33 to 26. Oops.
