Way off topic. I'm trying to find a way to fold back the copper braid in RG218/U coax.

This isn't the little stuff. It's 0.870" OD. One of our shops needs to make a nice termination, and wants to have the copper braid laid back onto the outer jacket for a few inches. This would be on a low-production basis, so it'd be nice to have a simple technique or tool that doesn't take much finesse or time. Of course, the braid acts like a Chinese finger trap and doesn't cooperate at all.

The usual sources haven't shown a handy-dandy tool yet. I've sketched out a couple of ideas, but surely someone already makes the thing.

Ideas?

Yeah, my idea is to use a proper terminal on the thing and install the terminal per the terminal manufacturer's directions. And folding the braid over the outer insulation isn't in there.

I'm used to the little stuff- RG59, but might be similar. You mentioned the Chinese Finger Trap thing. Well, it works the other way as well. Try cutting off the outside jacket, push back the braid, it will expand, and you might just be able to work it over the jacket. Works for me.

Doc, that was my first reaction as well. Apparently it's an odd application. The EE involved thinks there's a better way than UG 154, 7/16, etc. Hope springs eternal ...

cwh, I've been working on that ... the stuff expands when compressed longitudinally, but working it back means pulling it, too.

We'll figure something out.

I can envision a tool that would do it, but I have never heard of folding that much of the braid back so I doubt there's an off the shelf solution.
