Here's a pop culture reference from the 90's that you didn't get. http://fryrush.ytmnd.com/
I'm going a different direction here. I'm not going to go up and spend half an hour formatting this post. It's unneeded to get my point across here.
At this point, I am responding to long, rambling posts that talk in circles, and sounds like I'M RIGHT, YOU'RE STUPID.
Oh, and I can't see where that video ties into this thread. That's like saying the price of tea in China affects the cost of beach sand in Kansas.

You know the lightbulb ban works up here in the Great White North too, right?
The funny part of the whole light bulb swap thing is that from an electrical distribution standpoint I would gladly pay people to install incandescent lights just to have the load on the grid in the middle of the night. The morons have added so much unreliable wind power to the grid that we have to idle plants all over to cover reserves if they falter. Adding some load in the middle of the night when usage is way own would sure help even things out and get the steamers loaded up enough to justify them running at all.
If individual people could pay their bill based on hourly rates instead of peak and off-peak the light bulb fiasco would be history.

some how I don't believe you... too bad, one could only hope

Just another reason that wind sucks. I personally think it works reasonably well on the small scale, but I don't think it's where we should really take power generation.
In my area, we don't have peak/off-peak. We just pay for what we use, no matter when we use it.

The only reason I'm not feeding the bridge keeper anymore is because I'm bored.
In reply to oldopelguy:
Why not encourage people to cut the load still further at night to be able to supply it with windmills on a low-wind night?
In reply to chaparral:
Starting and shutting down plants is a pain. Ideally, power plants would have a constant load on them all the time.
Oldopelguy, correct me if I'm wrong on that.
In reply to chaparral:
The problem is that the amount of reserve capacity you have to have up and running at any given time is dictated by the highest peak load you have in a certain area for the past year, which is a relatively fixed amount. It's set up to protect from a suddenly cold night, or high demand (like say sump pumps) catching the utility off guard and load having to be dropped.
In the pre-wind days you would take several units down from 80% to 70% or the like and the efficiency of the units would be relatively constant so the lost productivity was small effect in the long run. Now with the wind online, the same number of unit have to be up and running to have the required capacity, and on a windless night all is as it was. On a windy night, though, the wind is making power and those units have to come down in power for every MW the wind puts on the grid. There is always a minimum, though, and at some point you can't throttle down a unit without taking it off line.
The other really important facet of wind is that since speed can't be controlled they are usually inductive generators. Inductive generators are limited in the amount of reactive load they can supply, and they need another generator hooked to them to maintain voltage properly. The other generators being lightly loaded make them hard to control voltage wise, and they reach a limit where they can't maintain voltage either. So practically we are limited to just so much wind a a percentage of the whole.
If we could get a bit more load at night, though, we would be more stable and could use more of the wind during the day. Ideally we would add more pumping hydro, but try building a dam these days. Instead I say burn a bulb all night and do your welding at 3am. It'll make my job easier for sure.
got to page 3 got tired of reading rants and nonsense. I've been using superbrightleds LED light bulbs for over three years now in my bedroom and bathroom without any problems. They aren't the brightest but I got a few in warm incan color temp and cool blue (4000k) which is similar to daylight. I love the daylight color for the bathroom and the warm color temp for the bedroom.
And after a PM or two were forwarded to me, Trapsp33d is outa here...
Namecalling and general trolliness are lame, but threats are another thing entirely.
For bonus points, name that film...
now let's talk light bulbs

That was gladiator, which was actually incorrectly doing the thumbs up/ thumbs down thing for the era.
Threats, really? Weird influx of trollishness lately.

light bulbs or gas prices?
"weather" turns windmills...maybe we're getting back on topic.

Sad to see this end on a sad note. In some aspects, I agree with Trap's opinion but definitely not with his delivery.
But, c'mon, the bull-in-a-china shop is only entertaining until it gets through the door. Add some MCD, mix it with keyboard diarrhea and it can only end badly.

Except by the time of Columbus, it was generally accepted that the world was round.
It didn't need to be a permanent ban...until I got the string of emails sent from 2am to 3am this morning. This user's problems go beyond this thread, into other threads and various private messages. (not just the ones quoted here, and other complaints choose to be anonymous.)
Note to future users: play nice. Having a contrary opinion is fine, but you need to express it in a way that doesn't involve namecalling or generally being a troll.

His problems go beyond the internet. Honestly feel sorry for him.
