I had my power company come to remove a large icicle threatening the power line to the house.
While here the rep noticed that the entrance cable jacketing was frayed and needs to be replaced.
I need an electrical contractor to do the job.
Anybody ever had this done ?
Where is this "entrance cable" located? AFAIK it's the electrical company's job to get the power to your house. Once it's physically there an electrician takes over.
So is the entrance cable before or after the wall of your house?
We do them fairly often at work. Do they want you to replace the meter cabinet as well? What sort of questions do you have?

As explained to me. the power company is only responsible for power to the house. from there the meter is the home owners responsiblity.
So before.

Mostly just curious about cost. I suppose the length has a lot to do with it. I don't think they will replace the meter cabinet. The tech ha it all apart to check things
What ever, it needs to be done. I'll call someone on Monday.
I'll report back when it is done.
It really depends on how long the run is and how involved it is. Is it straight up to the weatherhead, or does it run down the length of the house. I would call a couple different electricians, you would be amazed at how different the prices can be.
It's straight down, swag 20/30 ft.
I hear you on the electicians
If you don't have a 200 Amp panel, now would be a great time to upgrade. I spent $1900 to have my service entrance upgraded from 100A to 200A in Milwaukee, WI. All legit done by a real electrician.
Probably just the outer cover of the cable that is frayed. Mostly from UV.
I had the same kind of issue at my last house that I was selling. Inspection came back and noted it was an issue. The buyer (who was nickle and diming me on the sale) wanted it fixed. I bought some liquid electrical tape and coated the bad area and sealed everything up. The inspector agreed that it was a proper repair and signed off. The buyer was pissed, they expected a new entrance cable from the power company lines on the house to the meter box. Eh, berkeley 'em.
