There was a thread recently about somebody having received a free boat. I tried to find it but couldn't. So I've started this new thread.

I think they are overpriced. Generally boats in that condition the current owner has to pay per ton to get rid of.
What nocones said. Those boats are far from free.
Still, someone might grab them; I offloaded a crappy boat with a rotten floor and damaged transom for free once. Key to that is free delivery.
I saw an old fiberglass boat turned into a sandbox once. I thought it was a brilliant idea until I realized someday it will have to be emptied and removed from the yard. Two tons of wet sand, likely spiked with #500 of cat poop, made the idea disappear from my mind.

Someone near me has an old aluminum rowboat as a pond/waterfeature. It's ironic.. because normal boats try to keep the water out.. but this one is full.... Of.. you get it right?
Hey! I'm interested in free boats. Don't I count?
This one looks to be fun. I have a spare 70-horse merc sitting around.

I thought the same thing, Some of the early fiberglass boats can be interesting. Never going to be trully free, but if you want to go boating abd you want something different AND a project, why not?
I really want a Donzi Sweet Sixteen. Any free ones about that I can adopt?
Free dilapidated wood boat...I'm interested.
free aluminum boat...I might be interested
free fiberglass outboard boat...I'm almost certainly uninterested
free fiberglass I/O... not no but hell no.

If I had a sweet 16 (which I very much want) I would take a sawzall to the hood and make it a bowrider. Cause I'm blasphemous like that.

In most situations, my list is exactly the opposite. I've resurrected several glass I/Os. Wood boats have an aesthetic appeal to me, but completely impractical for actual use on the water for what I do. If I'm looking for a museum eye-candy boat, wood. If I'm looking to be on the water, glass I/O or outboard.
In reply to Curtis73 (Forum Supporter) :
I didn't say I wanted a wood boat to use, lol. I want to build a bar out the stern!

Go to Bone Yard boats for free wood boats. Not all are trash I've seen some I deeply lust after. I missed on a 48 foot Chris Craft DCFB ( Double Cabin Fly Bridge ) early 50's that had been repowered with a pair of Diesels sometime about 20?years ago.
I saw the definitive Sparks and Stevens wood sailboat. 38 foot schooner rigged Cutter foresails. Cruiser stern, Clipper bow. Paint looked horrible and in all likelihood some planks would need replacing. But the Teak deck looked good and solid. Some thoughtless upgrades but it wouldn't take a whole lot to get rid of them and put more appropriate fixtures in place.
Then sail the Caribbean from Island to island. All winter long.

Nohome, youre'dead to me!!!!! Blasphemy!!! have you ridden in a Donzi 16? There are plenty of bowriders only a few worthwhile runabouts and for fiberglass the Donzi 16 is the best. It's like carving a mustache on the Mona Lisa. Or Putting a tatoo on Michelangelo's David. Something that just shouldn't be done.

Actually, I said that.
I have ridden in a Sweet 16. I refuse to own another runabout. It is a completely useless design for my needs. It's like buying a monster truck for autocross, or a Miata as a tow pig.
I put a 5.0L Windsor in an Oldsmobile, a Caddy 500 in a Pontiac, and wouldn't hesitate to sawzall a fine Italian boat.
I take that back.... sawzall won't be blasphemous enough.... CHAINSAW!
In reply to Curtis73 (Forum Supporter) :
I have a Bayliner that is already a bowrider that I would be more than willing to trade for any Donzi ever made.
In reply to NOHOME :
I have a sawzall too. Everybody here has a sawzall.
Not everybody here has a Donzi.
NOHOME said:In reply to frenchyd :
not me. Curtis has the sawzall
OK, Thanks for clarification. You're back alive. Sorry Curtis now you're dead to me. I really regret your passing. You seemed like such a nice guy.

OK so you don't like runabouts. To each his own. But please don't ever destroy something just because you can.. While you have the right to the question is should you? Or should you sell/give it to someone who appreciates it?
All my life ( since I was 7) I've wanted a Chris Craft Cobra. About 3 decades ago I saw the fiberglass fin bolted on the trunk lid of a 1957 Chevy.
The owner's justification was the boat leaked every time he put it in the water. What he didn't bother to find out is wood swells. Boats always leak when first put in and seal up completely in a few days.
Today those boats are selling for up to a quarter of a million dollars
