Is this for real? Got what appears to be a official update from Microsoft about this.
Yep it's legit. Not looking forward to doing a fresh install on my gaming PC though...feels like just yesterday I was running Win7 RC.
Windows 10 is indeed a free update to all users of Win7, 8, 8.1, etc. It is a vast improvement over 8. I've been running the tech previews for several months now and love it.
Yes, the start menu is back. but, it is slightly different (contains some metro gui icons).
Overall, I really like it. Switching from XP/7 will have a little learning curve, but it is worth it.
Hmm... Do I update from 8.1? I've been pretty happy with it. Last time I updated I had to fix my touch screen.
In reply to Grtechguy:
It can't be any worse than Windows 8, which is basically Windows 7 painted over with a bunch of bad interface decisions that make it harder to get to the stuff you still need to actually operate the computer.
They are going to a cloud subscription model for their software I believe. If you want Office, you need to rent it. Adobe is already doing this for their software. It's nice for business (costs are more predicable) but sucks for a personal user (paying for Photoshop every month / year, even if you only use it once).
I suspect you can install old versions of Office on 10? Not sure (I would guess they make it difficult).

No problem for me, I use LibreOffice and GIMP
I wonder if MS will offer a disc image and let use use Win7+ keys for activation? It looks like currently the only option is an in-place upgrade, which is usually a bad idea with Windows. Plus it would mean a bare-metal reinstall would be a 2-stage process.
Gameboy. They are selling stand alone copies if you build a new PC.
Sadly, more expensive than the previous version by $10.
I see people holding on to machines for longer. slowly upgrading as needed.
Damn, I was hoping there would be free install discs. Ah well, if I can't get a free clean install then I'll do the usual thing...hang on to my current install for as long as possible.
When is this going to happen? Just purchased an 8.1 laptop for work and should get it on Tuesday. I would LOVE to install 10 before doing anything else.

Less than Linux? So they're giving away money to users too? Yay!
I just picked up a new 8.1 laptop. Well its still in the box. Im still using my mac at the moment. Should I wait to install all my programs and software until windows 10 comes out?
Other than an new UI, have you guys heard anything about performance/stabilty improvements?
I saw the popup yesterday and signed up for the update just for S&Gs. I have been running Win7 for about 2 years now (Win7 RC before that until MS disabled it) on my 8 year old Toshiba gaming laptop. No issues so far other than the typical Windows annoyances (UAC anybody? ). We will see though...
Ive gotten passed most of the annoyances with windows 8.x
Windows 10 sounds like a pain if i cant get a physical install disk.
-Supposedly it's significantly more lightweight than 8.x is.
-Right now all information points to it not being a "rent an operating system" however Office etc seems to be headed in that direction. Microsoft makes less than 10% (last I saw) of their revenue off OTS software installations, generally it's bundled with the new PC where they are paid for the license.
-The upgrade is only free for a year after that it costs OTS pricing to upgrade.
-The rumor is that you can buy a disc copy of the upgrade and it'll ship in at the end of the year but I haven't seem confirmation on that.
Ordered list syntax doesn't work for me ever on this board.
