Public Service Announcement...
If you have a XM/Sirius equipped radio but are not paying for the service it so happens that they are giving free sampling all holiday weekend.
Hopefully this will make your holiday traveling a little better.

Just tune your dial to those XM/Sirius stations and they magically play.
But, after Monday it turns into a pumpkin again and no longer gives you the stations unless you pay.
I think I heard it is 100 stations and they have like 130 so no guarantee that you will get The Oprah you are looking for but for me Lithium, New Wave, Classic Rewind and some other favs are all there.
They keep sending me offers for $25 for 6 months. I don't feel like it's worth it.
I turned it on today because it's free. Even at that price I feel like I'm overpaying.
I turned it back off again.
I love SiriusXM, it's all I listen to. I spend 3 hours or more per day in the car. Hate local radio and have no interest in streaming stuff. I listen to a lot of ESPN radio, NASCAR radio (though the callers give NASCAR its' redneck reputation) and a bunch of the music stations. There's always something on for me to listen to, and I can flip through all the channels easily with my steering wheel controls. I'm a big time channel flipper...in my 90+ minute ride, I'll flip stations at least 10+ times.
Good stuff. For $5/month, it's money well spent.

Check it again! Mine was working last night as of 9:30pm
It worked yesterday in my Suburban, and it didn't before. Good thing we have 14 hours of driving to do this weekend.
When I wrote this Thursday morning I had already tested it and it was working in my recently acquired '09 Pontiac Vibe. I have no subscription in that car and days earlier the service was not working.
Happy travels to all!

Could be. Maybe leave the car outside running for 15 minutes or so?
I still think satellite radio is worth paying for (at the discounted rates, of course). Granted, I mostly listen to podcasts, but when the family is in the car with me, they aren't that interested in listening to Matt Farrah and the like, so it's music then.
How's the track rotation on satellite? Do you hear the same songs multiple times a day?
Also, what is the state of portable satellite receivers? For instance, my wife loves to run with music, could she do with satellite?

Yes, but... Many of the stations are very specific. So like mentioned above, it is great if you jump stations to avoid this.
As my personal example, I spend a lot of time on their station titled Lithium which is '90s Grunge based. I also switch to a station titled 1st Wave which is 80's New Wave based. From there I also like a station titled Classic Rewind which is 80's rock from the cassette era. There is not just one station that plays 80's new wave, 80's rock and '90 rock. I'll alos add in a station that plays just '70's pop and another that plays just '80's pop and another that plays just '90's pop and another that just plays '00 pop

For that kind of portability, you might be better served by their subscription phone app.

My typical rotation is 80s on 8, Classic Rewind, Classic Vinyl, The Bridge, Ozzy's Boneyard, and Hair Nation. There's some duplication, but I can almost always find something I like and haven't heard too recently on one of those.
