But there were no pedophiles back then don't you know?

Strangely enough, all the kids in the n'hood knew where the 'weird people' (that was our name for them) lived and we just avoided those houses.

Not at all! I just couldn't think of a better topic. With childhood obesity on the rise it's nice to see kids out. There may be more to the story, I think the neighbor got a stick somewhere. Dan

riding electric scooters I don't know how thats going to help obesity... I know in many places it's not legal to ride those things till your are 15 or 16... and illegal to ride em on the sidewalk lol... is what I know is I REFUSE to buy my kids an electric scooter... they can pedal their own freaking selves :)

in FL my kiddos where almost 2 years apart... by the time they where 5 and 7 they would be out riding the streets going to friends houses and stuff in our little subdivision...

as others have mentioned... my 'rents should have the death penalty... when I was 4 or 5 years old I would ride my bike across town in germany... at 5 or 6 I would go into town by myself with my little red wagon and pick my little sister up from pre-k (looking at a map it looks like it was only .5km away (the entire village was 1km from one end to the other)... lol... still that was a lot of freedom to a little kid...

also funny was that when I clicked to watch the vid I knew the news anchor... moved to houston area a few months ago and bought a digital antenna... and channel 2 is the best reception of any we get... so when I watch local news it's them...

I don't think this lawsuit is nearly as frivolous as some. If I put myself in her shoes, I would be suing too, if the story is the way it happened.

I could understand maybe at age 5 or 6 and younger, but any older than that and I was a free range kid. I just wasn't allowed to cross 4 lane highways. It was kind of an unspoken rule. My elementary and middle school were within bounds.

Mine too. I rode my bike everywhere, including to school on several occasions. My elementary school was probably a mile away and my middle school was 2-3 miles away. I also made ramps from 2"x8"s and concrete blocks, and never owned a helmet.

Am I the only one who thinks that taking someone out of the house for not supervising your children is a little...ironic?

I'm a bit younger than most of the people here, so my growing up was a bit more recent, but I still was basically given free reign.
I still remember getting lost when skateboarding around town and ending up about 12 miles away from where we started. lmao
I'm covered in scars and wounded joints/bones/etc but I feel that it helped build character.

Kids these days (warning: generic blanket statement) are little E36 M3s because they aren't allowed to do anything, they aren't allowed to lose, get hurt, or experience anything because it's not safe!
Ridiculous

I grew up on an island.. if I was not at the beach, I was on the back bays.. or tromping through the marshes.. how I did not drown, is beyond me as I did not learn to swim till I was 10

We built a go-kart out of a self-propelled lawn mower. Neighbors never complained about us driving across their lawn, got their lawn mowed for free. Should have charged them but we were happy to just drive something without hassles.

My parents are in trouble...

dear lord, I was everywhere as a kid, rule was I had to be close enough to hear my dad whistle, and be home before the street lights came on. To this day I don't know how he can whistle that loud, I just know you don't want to be standing next to him when he does it. this coming from someone who loves the sound of a mufflerless rotary.

Ocean City, NJ.. back before the casinos came in and ruined life on the barrier islands. It was nice.. as a tourist town, once labor day came, all the lights were set to blink yellow except for 9th and 34th streets (Where the bridges onto the island were) and the town practically rolled the boardwalk up and put it away till spring.

That was a great time to grow up
